How did the churches of New Orleans ride out the hurricane?
I heard two huge trees were uprooted outside St. Louis Basilica and 20 historical buildings were destroyed. Any details on other churches or buildings?.

I heard that too. With portions of the city under water and with some of the pumps down, not to mention the fact that it's still raining, it will probably be a day or two before even dribbles of damage assessments start coming in.

Apparently the 30 feet of the iron fence behind the Basilica was ripped out, and parts of those trees fell onto the statue of Christ, knocking off parts of it.
I remember many a night walking through the French Quarter and seeing that statue lit from the front, casting a spooky shadow onto the back wall of the church.

I can give you this form a dear friend:
"this "Grand Coteau" (French for "big hill") is about the only place in Louisiana above sea level (50 ft. to be precise). We've got the Jesuits from the four communities in New Orleans (Loyola University, Jesuit High, the Provincial staff, and Ignatius residence, the retirement community) here, or at least two out of the three or four waves of people, as we are their hurricane shelter.
