Default Please pray for these dastardly people in New Orleans

Just when tragedy strikes...people lose everything...some have even lost their lives...while you, me, and others are concerned with doing all we can to aid those suffering through this tragedy, there are those who are taking the opportunity this tragedy has provided them, and they are looting and pillaging...like they are barbarians who just sacked a city and are dividing the spoils. Tragedy usually brings the best out of people...those who unselfishly give all they have to help a stranger, etc....then on the other hand, there are some sick bastards out there that go through like vultures and steal from others homes...break into stores and steal groceries and other necessities for survival...and even worse, they break into pharmacies and steal vital medications just so they can make money or get high...what about those who need those meds legitimately????? Why can't they take their energy and instead of causing further damage and despair...use their energy and time to help their neighbors. This is so, so tragic...Please pray for these vultures that theywill have a coversion of heart.

Really sick. Calling them barbarians is too good; at least barbarians fought to take over a city.

My prayers that the better nature of humanity will prevail.

This is so disgusting...I have to remind myself that these folks, too, are souls that Christ died to save....
Yes, indeed, they need our prayers. (We might well be the only people in the world who have ever prayed for some of them! All the more reason to pray..)

Dum,
I really hope you are joking about stealing groceries and other survival things.

I don't think there is anybody lower on the human chain than a looter, no matter what they take. If they steal groceries, how do you know they aren't selling them at high prices to other people? I supposed shooting them on sight is out of the question, so I'll pray for them instead.

I was just reading about this out on WorldNetDaily.com. Some of the reasoning for the looting that they are comming up with are sickening. Here is the story:
Quote:
Looters turn New Orleans into 'downtown Baghdad'
Defender: 'It's an opportunity to get back at society' for those who've been oppressed

With few supplies coming into the seriously flooded city of New Orleans, which is now 80 percent under water after Hurricane Katrina pummeled the Gulf Coast yesterday, looters are taking matters into their own hands, hauling off food and other items from local stores.

That is pretty sickening. And it is just this attitude:

"Defender: 'It's an opportunity to get back at society' for those who've been oppressed"

that guarantees people like this particular looter will be oppressed all their lives.

Back in 1991, there was looting on the west and south sides of Chicago when the Chicago Bulls WON the NBA championship. Some things just don't make any sense, even in this fallen world.

The Govenor of Louisiana even said herself, I can understand people taking food and water, what they need to survive. However, people are taking whatever. Microwaves, TVs, jewelry, clothes.

People have lost their lives, those who have lost everything are grateful for their lives. How much you want to bet these theives will be the first in line for handouts and reimbursement from the government?

Just pray for everyone. Those who died, who survived, who are caing for other and those who aren't. Pray also for those soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan who are watching this happening to thier families on TV and the Internet.

A media image can show 5 people in the store...not all 5 are there for the same reason.

I'm with the Governor on this....for those who are looting for basic supplies until help arrives, then I don't have a problem with it. Imagine you having taken the time to buy and stock up on supplies for the oncoming storm only to have everything swept away....what are you supposeed to eat and drink until help comes? What if you have medical needs and you need first aid stuff? What if your insulin supply or blood pressure meds got swept away? You find what you can until then, or until you reach a Red Cross station.

Those who loot for financial gain, sheer selfishness or the stupid revenge theory, I have a problem with. But yes, the answer is to pray for them, not get worked up over it.

In trying to bring law and order, a policemen yesterday was shot in the head to stop a looting. The policeman is fine, he is recovering. The two looters were taken to jail. The mayor of New Orleanes said the jails ARE operating.

Yet when police are not able to arrest people, the are going up to looters, giveing warnings and taking down names, so they can be proscicuted at a later date.

What's to say that these people well even 'stay around' to be brought to court when things improve? They may even be dead due to their own selffishness.

WIth water rising to 9ft in the eastern part of New Orleans, even these looters may not survive. Then they looted for what....nothing!

Good morning Dumspirospero, I saw this on the news last evening and thought of you being in the midst of it. How disheartening! The cameras showed many people running through stores with shopping carts, loading them up and laughing as though on a lark.
I recall living in "small town" PA in 1972 during a devestating flood caused by hurricane Agnes and the many homes and stores that were flooded. There was very little looting at all but many neighbors helping neighbors.
I do believe it's a sign of the times that this is happening on such a grand scale. Moral responsibility to one's brother has dipped to new low. It is very sad.
I hope you yourself are doing well enough.

Did you happen to notice who was left in the city? It's the poor...some are stealing for survival, some are stealing because they feel justified in doing so, whether for revenge or for seeing a way to bring money to themselves...either way, looking down on them with disdain seems to me a little holier than thou. You don't see the rich looting as a way for revenge or for money; you only see the poor. The problem is much deeper than just "despicable" people who feel like living off of society. How many of us here bother fighting for any social justice. I'm not condoning what is going on, but sometimes I get grumpy when I see what I perceive to be incredible lack of charity--but I could just have gotten out on the wrong side of the bed today.

This was on the news and I turned round and said to my Mum - "There are always some ready to take advantage of a disaster".
