Default Prayers for those in purgatory

Hi!

If we suspect someone may be in purgatory, how long should we pray for them to get out of purgatory? Is there a novena I could say?

Thanks

I don't know, but I refuse to give up praying for my uncle who dropped dead 20 years ago. Nobody knew if he'd recently been to confession. Maybe 20 years has been enough time, but I'd rather not chance it. I figure if he's already taken care of then maybe my prayers will help somebody else out.

I have heard from various sources that the amount of time the poor souls remain in Purgatory can be measured in centuries, or even longer. This is because the poor souls no longer have access to the various means of making atonement for sins which we can perform here on Earth. They can no longer fast, or put money in the poorbox at church, or pray the rosary, etc. Most importantly perhaps, they can no longer perform works of mercy... they can no longer feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned. As a result, it takes an agonizingly long time for them to accomplish their purification - unless we pray for them and earn indulgences for them.

This is why it's so important for us to perform acts of penance, and works of mercy, while we are still here on Earth. If we wait until our deathbed to have a conversion of heart, we will have a long time to pay the price.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Poor people in purgatory I will pray everyday for them!

Quit praying for a soul when the said soul tells you know they have attained heaven.

Then and only then.

Only God knows who is in Purgatory. Therefore our prayers should be for all souls there and not one individual we think might be there.

From my post in another thread:

Thanks for helping spread devotion to the Holy Souls In Purgatory! I found this page where you can print the St. Gertrude prayers. You can leave them in churches. I printed some and am planning to place them in a chapel I go to often.
