I thought the fuel reserves were unrefined petrolium. I may be wrong here, but they would have to be refined into jet fuel before shipped, if I am correct.

Ani, if I'm not mistaken, the reserves are in the form of crude. The problem is and has been the lack of refining capacity. That has been further diminished by Katrina. Also, pipelines are down, hopefully only because of lack of electricity to run the pumps. We have two feeding our area and one is dry, although less than capacity transmission through it is supposed to start today.

gilliam and bob, I just phoned my mp's office and emailed him. I said that the oil in the American reserve is not refined and therefore not available for use. I asked that Canadian refined oil products be offered at low cost to the Americans. So that is going to get discussed. I will follow up.
I also repeated my request for Canadian lumber products. I was told that the Americans can't handle that information yet, because they are too wrapped up -- understandably -- in search and rescue; but that there will be meetings between Canada and the US on the subject of lumber in the coming weeks.
Prime Minister Martin and President Bush will talk this afternoon. We are likely to hear more news about Canadian efforts tomorrow. As it stands the list of Canadian assistance is growing. See my thread Friends of America offer help.

I had heard yesterday from a co-worker that from the moment the oil gets to the refineries, it takes four weeks before it's at the pump as gasoline. Don't know what the process and distribution time is for jet fuel.

OK. I'll phone my mp again tomorrow. Meanwhile I think the refined oil situation is critical enough for some of you to be emailing your embassador to Canada and our prime minister.
