Jesus, Son of David
In Scripture, when we read that Jesus is the Son of David, I understand that Jesus would be born of that family line, but what is David to Jesus. Is David an uncle or a great grandfather or neither?
Thank you.

Only a "blood relative" in His humanity.
The critical point is the ROLE King David had in the physical salvation of the Jewish nation and the level of piece and prosperity that came through him. Davis was there KING as Christ was both the Messiah ["Savior"] and heavely and eternal KING

Re: Jesus, Son of David
A common explanation is that Jesus was a biological descendant of David through Mary and the legal heir of David through his foster-father Joseph, the latter also being descended from the long line of later kings of Judah.

Re: Jesus, Son of David
Scott Hahn explains this so well on the EWTN show Genesis to Jesus and why Mary's betrothment to Joseph wasn’t just any engagement, it was the fulfillment of the Davidic kingdom. He also explains it little bit in the audio series Hail Full of Grace on his website Salvation History, its right in the Audio files tab and I believe it is the second or third audio file on the list for Hail Holy Queen.

Re: Jesus, Son of David
David was Jesus's 39X Great-Grandfather on Mary's side (Luke's geneology) and Adoptave 39X Great-Grandfather on Joseph's side (Matthew's gospel) (Mary and Joseph were distant relatives.) My count might be off, but it's something in this ballpark. David was a distant ancestor of Jesus. Saying Jesus was a Son of David was just a short way of saying he was of the house of David.

...it goes back to God's Promise:
Quote:
13 He will build a temple for my name) and I shall make his royal throne secure for ever.
16 Your dynasty and your sovereignty will ever stand firm before me and your throne be for ever secure." '
25 'Now, Yahweh God, may the promise which you have made for your servant and for his family stand firm forever as you have said, 26 so that your name will be exalted for ever and people will say, "Israel's God is Yahweh Sabaoth." Your servant David's dynasty will be secure before you, 27 since you, Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, have disclosed to your servant, "I am going to build you a dynasty." Hence, your servant has ventured to offer this prayer to you. 28 Yes, Lord Yahweh, you are God indeed, your words are true and you have made this generous promise to your servant. 29 What is more, you have deigned to bless your servant's dynasty, so that it may remain for ever before you; for you, Lord Yahweh, have spoken; and may your servant's dynasty be blessed with your blessing for ever.' (2 Samuel 7:13, 16, 25-29)
|
...the only way David's throne/dynasty could endure forever would be if an Eternal King would possess it; conversely, the only way that God's Promise would come into fruition would be if one of David's descendants could occupy the David's throne forever!
Jesus is the Eternal King of kings and Lord of lords!
Maran atha!

Thank you; this helps when trying to explain to a couple of teens! Thanks to all who posted and to KP3243 for the link to EWTN's audio series. There is a lot to listen too and a great way to learn if you can't get out to a Bible study.
Peace
