Re: IIMMEDIATE NEED: Baton Rouge or surrounding area, PLEASE READ!
Duns,
I have your address and I think people would be less apprehensive if I know somebody to send stuff to. I am going to a meeting tonight and will beg stuff from them. I will talk to my parish before I go to work to see if they can get something together.
And now, if only Greyhound will cooperate...let us pray!

Re: IMMEDIATE NEED: things you can donate.
I'd like to send a bunch of gently used childrens / young girl books as well as some used clothes of mine (adult woman) and perhaps we still have some of my daughters left (we just went through her closets a couple of weeks ago, in anticipation of school starting). I'd also like to make some rosaries to send.
I've checked with UPS re: free shipping. Their website claims:
"...not in a position to handle individual requests for free shipping..." It then goes on to say that previously used items are neither welcome nor of help in situations such as this.
I take it you want the used items and believe you can make good use of them. That being said, I'll see if I can't get more info from either FEDEX or Greyhound regarding their policy on free shipping (neither are open today, and their websites don't give anything regarding Katrina shipping policy).
Thanks for your shipping addresses. It's nice to know that we can do something and even nicer that it's through someone we "know".
God bless you for all your efforts!

Yes, I hear children's books are needed to comfort the kids and keep them occupied in the boredom of the shelters.

Re: IIMMEDIATE NEED: Baton Rouge or surrounding area, PLEASE READ! [UPDATED 09/05 1:30pm]
I just learned that my kid brother, an ER doc who has lectured on putting Emergency Response Systems into place in Third World Countries (he's lectured in Africa, Central America, Cuba to name a few places), is in Baton Rouge as we speak. I just got an email response to my asking if he was heading down, as it sounds like they really need his expertise!
He's at LSU where they have a large triage center for the evacuees. Is your pizzaria open and close to there? If so, I'll tell him to find you and stop in for dinner (if he and his wife - she's a nurse - can get out for a quick meal).
Thanks again, Sonny, for all you're doing out there. I know it must be more than a little overwhelming being around so much chaos and loss.

Will do! I've just sent him an e-mail saying I would post anything that they need but are not able to get via the standard channels.

Re: IMMEDIATE NEED: things you can donate.
I was just thinking that if Greyhound will ship things for free, would you like a suitcase (or suitcases). I used to travel a lot for business and have an older very large hardside suitcase on wheels that I used all the time. I could fill it with the things I'd like to send and it could be then given to a large family who was getting new things, but had no way of keeping or transporting them in the immediate future.
I'd be happy to send several suitcases, the large one noted, and I think I could toss in an oversized suit bag (lots of storage space, too heavy for me to carry effectively when fully packed, but a large father of a family might love it, it's very well made). I can check what else I have in the loft and will send them as well.
Let me know if these would be helpful or in the way.

dumspirospero:
We have a parishioner who is driving a truck in the LA area trying to deliver some food relief right now. I've contacted my parish to see if we can divert him towards you. He's probably not too far from you right now.
Last we heard from him was yesterday, so it may be hard to contact him. If he hasn't dropped his load, and we can get a line to him, I think I can say that the load is yours.
(If you see a truck being driven by a disgusted lawyer type, simply ask him if he still has food in the truck...)
I've given the people who will talk to him the link to this Thread so they can read your contact information.
I think that's the best I can do right now.
In Christ, Michael

Also have 2 garbage bags of toys in good condition for all those children who have nothing to play with and a bag of childrens books.
I'm donating my stuff through catholic charities to the relocation sites being set up in my area the displaced are being sent to, so I don't even have to ship it.
And my house is cleaner for it and my kids learn what it means to give to another in need!

My kids just outgrew all their clothes for the season! I was going through everything tonight and found alot of nice clothes to give. I will try to find a place to donate them specifically for hurricane relief. Also anyone who is interested, there should soon be many great sales for warm weather clothing and shoes. Although it does get cold from time to time in the winter, after living in the Florida panhandle for five years, we mostly wore our summer clothes all year 'round. I also thought about going to value city with fifty bucks and buying as many nice children's tennis shoes the next time there is a big sale. There are also great sales at Old Navy at the end of season. That way I know my little bit of money will help more people. I find great sales for my kids, I am sure I can do the same for others.
I also think alot about how so many of the African American ladies in my area dress so beautifully to go to church on Sundays, and how so many might feel awkward going to church in their casual clothes. I feel like I want to donate "church" clothes, and am wondering if anyone knows of a specific charity for this. That might sound silly, but I know how important it is for these ladies who have lost so much to be able to go to church and feel comfortable.

Re: IMMEDIATE NEED: things you can donate.
Good work, Brothers and Sisters.
This is so much more productive and helpful than the finger pointer I saw on so may other threads. You guys are a credit to the Faith.
May our Lord bless you all, Michael

Re: IMMEDIATE NEED: things you can donate.
I love the idea of sending "Church clothes". I was just going to go through my everyday clothes, but I've got some nice things that would be great to send.
thanks for the idea!
I dug out and dusted the two suitcases I was talking about. Now to load them if he wants suitcases.
