John Roberts will be a great Chief Justice. I can't help but be proud that we share the same faith.

Serious Catholicism automatically provides a person with a certain global and historical perspective.

It is just grand standing, nothing more. There is no substance to their line of questioning. It is insulting that we pay these people.

The folks in their states elected them. They should be paid regardless of their political positions, I think.

I understand that their own states pay them. I am saying that we all are paying them. I help pay Senator Durbin and Senator Obama. I am sorry to all of you, but I never did vote for them. Now they are getting paid for being very confrontational.

But...their grand standing is making them look like little 5 year olds that didn't get their way.

Judge Roberts received the highest rating possible from the American Bar Association. The President of the ABA is going to speak on Roberts' behalf and explain just how they grade their attorneys and how hard it is to get the highest rating.

On the other side, the President of Family Planning will speak against his nomination.

This man has a brilliant legal mind and yet he's very humble. President Bush should be commended for nominating him. I hope his next nomination will be from the same yoke.

That no longer carries the weight it once did. Under Bush, the White House no longer solicits a recommendation from the ABA, in the belief that it is usually inconsequential but potentially damaging to their nominees.

As a result, people haven't paid that much attention to ABA ratings in recent years.

I've worked for a Judge for over 15 years and before that for many attorneys. Granted, the ABA has had problems, but a high rating from them still carries weight with the legal profession. Besides, it's just one of the many many excellent qualifications that Judge Roberts has in favor of his nomination.

Judges and lawyers, yes (it's the ABA, after all). Politicians, not so much.

I think this is also the reason we haven't heard the White House trumpeting this fact - I hadn't heard about it until your post.

Stephen Tober, Chair of the ABA Judiciary Committee will Testify Thursday at Roberts Hearing

September 15th, 2005 by Scared Monkeys -->

The Senate Judiciary Committee has been meeting the past week to determine whether to pass John Roberts to the full Senate as a candidate for the seat of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. They have spent the past 3 days interviewing Roberts, and determining whether he is worthy of the position.

On Thursday, the committee will hear from Stephen Tober, chairman of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, who has given Judge John Roberts the highest rating, “Well Qualified”. Roberts will have the opportunity to present the findings of the ABA to the committee, and explain how they came up with this recommendation.

Stephen Tober is one of the most respected attorneys in the country, practicing out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He has a successful practice specializing in civil litigation, professional negligence, and domestic relations.

Tober’s resume is extensive, having served as president of the New Hampshire Trial Lawyers Association in 1977 and as member of the board of governors of The Association of Trial Lawyers of America from 1980-1986. He was a delegate to the New Hampshire Constitutional Convention in 1984 and on the New Hampshire Board of Bar Examiners from 1997-2000.

This path has led Stephen Tober to the seat he will take in front of the Senate tomorrow. He will have the opportunity to explain the grueling review that the ABA puts the nominees through, how they come to the rating they give them, and explain the ABA’s role in the process.
