Default How do you pronounce Augustine?

The title says it all. I have mostly only seen his name written, and in my head I pronounce it Awe-GUS-teen, but is this correct? I heard someone pronounce it AWE-gus-tin (or something like that) the other day. Thanks in advance!

I usually say it AU-gus-tine. But I can butcher the pronunciation of even the simplest or words, so it usually isn't safe to go by me.

When referring to the Saint, I say "Saint Ah-GUS-tin". When refering to the grass, I say "Saint AH-gus-teen."

Because of this, I tend to crack a smile when someone calls the Saint, "Saint AH-gus-teen"

The classic is "Uh-GUS-tin"

This is because in Latin, his name is 4 syllables, Aurelius Augustinus, and the stress is always on the second in 4 syllable words. So, the gus part is stressed in Latin, so it became so in the english as well.

I think there is a definite protestant/catholic divide on how to pronounce it.

AuGUStine for the saint.

AUgustine for plants, cities, and last names of people who aren't Catholic.

St. Augustine is the name of my parish. We have always pronounced it: Uh-GUS-tin

'Course we're in NY, so there's no telling how it should be pronounced.

Uh-GUS-tin.

There's a town in Florida (the oldest in the US, I believe, that is called St. Augustine, but I've always heard that pronounced "awe-GUS-teen".

The Florida city is "AW-gus-teen".

The saint is "Uh-GUS-tin".

Note the difference is not just in emphasis but in pronunciation.
