He isn't. It's a nickname given by others (IOW, it isn't something the Jesuits themselves call him).

Pope Benedict was often called the "German Shepherd' by people, but the actual title of the Pope isn't 'German Shepherd'.

Okay thanks. The answer was actually in the link I posted but I didn't see it. LOOL!!

Instead of wasting a thread, let me ask you, how important was the Jesuits in Catholic history? What distinguishes the order within the Catholic church?

Nope. It was because the Pope said so. They were a band of friends going on pilgrimage to the holy land, but said that if after two years they still could not go then they would offer their services to the Pope. When they went to the Pope he shocked them by asking them to draft a constitution and form an order. IIRC
