Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

I totally disagreed with Chavez's policies. I thought he missed tremendous opportunities that Venezuela had from its oil riches. While there were good things done for the poor, the country as a whole suffered, become isolated and was gutted. The Catholic Church as usual, stood in opposition to Chavez's oppressive agenda. Everyone always overlooks at how the Church stands up against these types of regimes.

As I've said in other forums. I'm amazed Chavez viewed Venezuelan Bishops as 'tumors' in 2006, and here we are about to face judgement. It was like pharaoh mocking God and choosing his own death sentence.

That being said, I feel total compassion for the man. Not the dictator, but the human, the father and husband, the Catholic he professed to be. I wish him a miraculous recovery, if not a peaceful farewell.

I second this entirely. My Cuban family fled Castro during the revolution to Venezuela and now we have to leave Venezuela because Chavez is doing the same thing. But I do sympathize.

Lord, may Hugo Chavez be a champion of all Church teaching to the world and strive for justice and peace. Send angels to minister to this cause. Lead him and all the world to your Sacred Heart, now and forever. Our Lady, pray with us. Amen.

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

Katholikos, you probably more than anyone here are witness to what is happening in S. America. I am not, S. American, hispanic or Latino but do follow economic events there. Mr Chavez is not alone in his beliefs and ideology, and not just with Fidel. The entire continent, with the exception of maybe Colombia and Chile are moving in that direction, even if not as extreme.

What I'm wondering and what I'd like to know, especially from fundamentalist and former fundamentalist is how their religion is affected by big governments. If fundamentalism in S. America is on the rise as was stated a few years ago, how will they deal with these Leftist governments that if not anti-Christian, is not friendly to Christian beliefs? The Catholic Church has been consistent in its response to oppressive govts like the Castro regime. Basically it's: We will never go to war with you, but we will never submit to govt pressures that go against our faith. As a Catholic(welcome by the way Katholikos) one thing you can feel assured is this principle. The Church will not compromise it's moral truths to any govt. Other religions may, but not this one. I suppose we'll see if fundamentalist can stand as tall, because they surely will be tested if they're in any way opposed to their current Govts positions.

At the risk of sounding too political myself, I would love to see a Pope from S. America or Africa. I would love to see S. Americans and Latinos return to the Church, Latinos and Hispanics as much as anyone have made it the universal Church that it is today. I feel as much solidarity with oppressed Catholics around the world as my own American/Asian heritage.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.
