Do it--then tell your instructors that it's sinful to give you that much work

First of all, it's doing unnecessary servile work that is sin. Homework is neither unnecessary, nor servile. Technically you are doing homework voluntarily, since getting an education is a choice after a certain point.

That being said, I think it's a good idea to not put things off until Sunday if they can be done on other days. Keep the day as Holy as possible

Please read this:

http://www.ewtn.com/vexperts/showres...+DESC&start_at=

Also, you don't want to take after the Pharisees and not do any work on Sunday but use your free time to watch football and play video games all day. You should keep the day holy by going to Mass and using the day to grow spirtually (for example reading/studying the Bible, reading the Catechism, reading books about or by the Saints, etc.)

Maybe the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Catechism of Trent will help:

I am assuming that you haven't put it off Friday evening and Saturday and are NOT just looking for a reason to avoid doing it on Sunday? LOL

I hope that person who asked the question realizes that was a joke.

I have read that homework on Sunday is okay because it is not servile work. What is servile work.

From the Catechism:
2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body.123 Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

Even though it is not servile work, whatever that is, isn't it still hindering "worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body?"

Homework is given out on Friday and if I remember from my high school days the homework given is no heavier on Friday than it is on Thursday. So it was my choice. I could have done my homework on Friday or Saturday but I dind't want to. Therefore I did it on Sunday. Homework is not specifically given out to be done on Sunday but if you don't do it until then, you are responsible for completing it and there is no sin involved.

How could you even think such a thing?

No, it wouldn't. I have a Q & A catechism and it says that 'unneccesary servile work' is forbidden on the sabbath. Servile means actual labour, and unneccesary means you don't HAVE to do it(which with HW you do) so it would not be a sin.

Wow, I actually had the same question as the OP, and I sign in and this is the first thread I see.

I guess that was a little miracle....maybe???

Well, thanks to all who answered my question, even though it wasn't mine and I didn't ask it. Let me just get this right....am I correct in saying that the answer is "It's OK to do it because it's not servile work, but it would not be OK if it was used as an excuse not to go to Mass or keep the day holy." ?

I've refrained from reply directly to OP since I've noticed they're banned....for whatever reason. But I did get a well-needed chuckle from Sanctus' and others' hopefully good-natured replies.

I have to say I'm far beyond school days and still agonize on mortal/venial - sin/no sin - servile work/not servile work - etc. For adults, as I recall my religion class instruction, anything that constitutes work for an individual that they receive pay for would be a sin. Servile work, in some cases, is permitted - not under pain of mortal sin - and that would be mothers/housewives whose job it is to cook meals on Sunday (not clean the house but cooking, etc.) Driving for anyone wouldn't be a sin - although a labor of the body - unless you're a truckdriver or cabbie - i.e. getting paid for a job.

But I tend to hold off until the last minute on clutter, etc - and then put it off some more since I'm also wondering how much clutter-cleaning constitutes a mortal sin? Don't answer. I left it again.

Nice try.

Far worse, would be showing up Monday morning without your homework finished. Go for the grades with the pointy tops! AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
