Default Bush and Supreme Court justices attend Red Mass

WASHINGTON On the eve of the Supreme Court's new term, President Bush has attended the Roman Catholic church's annual Red Mass for the judiciary.

The president was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Anthony Kennedy and Stephen Breyer at St. Matthew's cathedral in Washington.

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick greeted Bush and told the standing room-only crowd of worshipers that they were there to pray for Roberts and for God's guidance in the new term.

One word you will never hear in a homily at a Washington, D.C., Red Mass is "abortion."
Perhaps the Cardinal Archbishop does not want to make Justices Kennedy and Breyer uncomfortable?
The truth is uncomfortable.

You won't hear this from Cardinal McCarrick. It is not good.

Shouldn't Catholics expect the Cardinal to argue the pro-life case "before the Supreme court" each year at the Red Mass when he has four justices listening to his homily? The Cardinal talks a good case except when he can really make a difference. McCarrick should step down so the Pope can choose a better man.

Not historically.

HISTORY OF THE RED MASS
The solemn votive Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit, is celebrated annually at the opening of the judicial year. Judges and lawyers attend in a body, joined by public officials and law faculty members. Although this Mass is used at the opening of legislative assemblies and school terms, indications suggest it was first associated with the law profession, and the appellation "Red Mass" customarily refers to the Mass initiating the legal year.

This venerable custom originated in Europe in the 13th century. From the time of Edward I, the Mass was offered at Westminster Abbey at the opening of the Michaelmas term. It received its name trom the fact that the celebrant was vested in red and the Lord High justices were robed in brilliant scarlet. They were joined by the university professors with doctors among them displaying red in their academic gowns. Today the Catholic judges assemble at the Westminster Cathedral for the celebration of the Red Mass, and a short distance away in ancient Westminster Abbey the non-Catholic jurists attend religious worship.

In France, the inauguration of the judicial year was celebrated annually at the famous Sante-Chapelle. Although the chapel was desecrated during the French Revolution, it was restored by Louis Phillipe and dedicated exclusively to the use of the "Messe Rouge". In 1906, the Parliament secularized the Chapel and the celebration transferred to Saint-Germain-1' Auzerrois. The Red Mass has also been traditionally identified with opening of the Sacred Roman Rota, the supreme judicial body of the Catholic Church...

Angry Re: Bush and Supreme Court justices attend Red Mass

Cardinal McCarrick is a dyed in the wool Kerry/Kennedy liberal. Abortion issues and the Eucharist are not subjects he really wants to talk about. If only our new Pope would send him and Herrod Mahoney to a cloistered convent never to be heard from again it would be a blessing.

Debunkerman:

No wonder Catholics for a free Choice gets a free ride and is allowed to harrass Pro-life Catholics all over the country!

This is something we can agree on! This episode is completely unike the following...

A certain Pro-Life Democratic (I'm not allowed to tell his name) asked his paster to do the opening prayer at a State Democratic Convention a couple of years ago.

The pastor (I can't identify him either) let rip with a prayer that talked about the evil of Legalized Abortion and softening the hearts of the people in the room so they'd work to end it.

The Democratic politicians and activists were forced to say, "Amen" after spending most of the prayer glaring at the Democratic Campaign Manager and his paster.

I think this is how the Church used to challenge politicians.

I'm sure the people in the Cathedral couldn't have been more upset at such a speech by a Cardinal of the Church during MASS than the Democrats were by this paster during their State Convention.
