Archbishop Hannan of NO
ARCHBISHOP KNOWN AS 'NEW ORLEANS POPE'...
But the archbishop urges that the lesson of the storm not be lost -- and insists that it was a clear message from God. "I've been speaking at local parishes, and here's what I kept telling the people," he says. "I say, look, we are responsible not only for our individual actions to God, but in addition to that we are also citizens of a nation and in the Old Testament as well as the New Testament, it says that a nation has a destiny and we are responsible whether we cause it or not for the course of morality in that nation. We are responsible as citizens for the sexual attitude, disregard of family rights, drug addiction, the killing of 45 million unborn babies, the scandalous behavior of some priests -- so we have to understand that certainly the Lord has a right to chastisement. If you ask me if the Lord knew of this, this was the greatest storm in the history of the nation. He is the creator. He certainly permitted this. It would be as silly as asking if Henry Ford knew how a car worked."
According to Hannan, people who experienced it "are beginning to react according to that concept of morality." He says that when he preached on the topic last Sunday in the devastated area of Mandeville, where 1,000 attended Mass, "people loudly applauded. They want to be told the truth." "We have reached a depth of immorality that we have never reached before," he says. "And the chastisement was Katrina as well as Rita...."
"I keep telling people, you have got to talk about this chastisement, you've got to let not only your children and grandchildren, but other people know about it -- the others who have not gone through it, how much of a penance it was. To come back to your home and find it destroyed is an enormous shock, not only to the father and the mother, but to the children. Because this is the worst storm in our history, it should become part of our heritage. We should tell our descendants just how terrible it was so they will understand that it was a chastisement* and should improve our morality."

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
Archbishop Hannan I believe. If he says it's a chastisment, it's a chastisement. Although he has been retired for several years, he is regularly on Catholic TV here in Baton Rouge with a variety of talk type shows. He is well loved and greatly admired. He is a combat veteran of WWII (I think he was a paratrooper in addition to being a priest/chaplain) and although he was not born in New Orleans, his love for the city and its people is without question.

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
Now Sienna, you know I just had to hear the message from the right messenger. I don't know the good Abp. personally but he and I go way back. I was chief altar boy for my parish in 1967 when we dedicated the new church. I'm probably one of the last people I know who actually got to go down on one knee to kiss an Abp.'s ring. He was also the chief celebrant at my high school graduation mass in 69. And he has been and spoken at many Diocese of Baton Rouge events (BR was once part of the Archdiocese of NO) and as a member of the cathedral choir I got to listen to him and greet him afterward.
I don't think I know who Fr. Corapi (sp) is since we lost EWTN on our cable lineup over 5 yrs. ago (boy do I miss EWTN - they put it on the digitial tier in a sports block - I don't do sports). Abp. Hannan is on our diocesan channel on a regular basis with Mary Ann McCall. I watch them all the time. But I do have to point out that Abp. Hannan was talking about chastisement that ANY American city could be guilty of. The sheep hear and recognize the voice of their shepard and I've heard his voice almost all of my life. And anyway, the fact that he is getting standing ovations kinda tells you about where the heart and the soul of the plain folk are down here.
Was Fr. Corapi the dark haired priest who sat on the left hand side of the set with the gray haired older priest on the right hand side and answered written questions on EWTN?

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
Here is Fr. Corapi. http://www.fathercorapi.com/about.aspx
You are thinking of Fr. Trigilio and Fr. Levis. http://www.ewtn.com/series/2003/weboffaith.htm
EWTN is also offered on the sports digital cable tier in my area. I have complained to the cable company; they have two Christian stations on the extended cable but not EWTN. Because of this I called to cancel cable but instead was able to get the tier with EWTN for $5/month more than what I had been paying.

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
Ok, yep that's the two priests I remember. Never heard Fr. Corapi. But on the issue of cable companies........How many fundamentalist channels can we have? (Answer 5) Are THEY booted up to digital cable service? No. And to be brutally honest, the programming coming from the Diocese of BR supplemented by programming from the Archdiocese of Boston pales in comparison to what we used to get on EWTN. WLAE (NO) runs some programs here and they are good but I miss EWTN. And no, I was told that I would have to buy the converter box and pay for the tier. I like EWTN and miss it but I'm not adding $25 to my already high cable and internet bill.

Oh dear, we weren't required to buy the converter box and there is no rental fee but if we discontinue the service then it goes back to the cable company. Both here and in Nebraska I have found that the cable company would rather offer a deal than lose a customer. I guess we are blessed.

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
Nope, that's just Baton Rouge and to make matters worse I live 20 mi. out of BR in a town in which there is no Catholic Church. Cable company laughed at me and said there weren't enough Catholics in BR to warrant it (and, yes, we are a significant minority of 40%) but you have to remember that Brother Jimmy is still a big factor here not to mention any of the other Protestant mega-churches.

I have the highest regard for Hannan. An outstanding priest, a lovely human being and I think he knows what he's talking about.
Apparently the Pope has no problem with the idea of chastisements on nations from this recent blurb:
(Letters From the Synod, #1 | Fr. Kenneth Baker, S.J.)
In his homily during the Mass Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the importance of the Eucharist for the Church and the world. He also spoke rather strongly about the loss of faith in Europe. He referred to God’s punishment of Israel in the Old Testament and intimated that the same thing could happen to Europe and the West in General if the nations continue their drift away from God and the acknowledgement of God as Creator and Redeemer. There was an echo in his talk of the strong language he used in his talk to the Cardinals at the beginning of the conclave that elected him.

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
I still don't buy the chastisement idea (as in God setting people up to suffer and die). Big hurricanes happen and sometimes they hit populated areas. I am willing to concede that the city of New Orleans should have prepared better; the sin of poor preparation (lack of stewardship) led to some ugly consequences, but some destruction was inevitable.

Brother Hrolf:
I just saw Bishop Hannan on EWTN ("The World Over"). He was a member of the 82nd Airborne, and his Regiment was the one they sent to the neighborhood around the Cathedral.
As you probably know, Catholic Charities isn't giving any money to any of the Archioceses, so the Archdiocese of N.O. is going to need some help with rebuilding. Both Archbishop Hannan and the present Bishop of N.O. would like to be able to help people rebuild their homes and their lives, as well as the churches of N.O.:
http://www.arch-no.org/
Please donate now to assist with our efforts - Click here to donate
https://www.catholic.org/ycvf/donate_archnola.php
or checks can be sent to:
Archdiocese of New Orleans, Hurricane Relief Fund,
P.O. Box 715024, Columbus, OH 43271-5024
Thank you for your support and God bless!
Please remember, money given to Catholic Charities will not be used to rebuild Catholic Churches in N.O.. So, If you want to help rebuild the Churches in N.O., you need to give to the Archdiocese.
Thank you.
In Christ, Michael

Brother Hrolf:
Cable bills are ridiculously high - I think they border on extortion.
I stopped doing sports for a long time when the brats went on strike for the umpteenth time. I still don't watch nearly as much as I did a long time ago.
The tier includes a lot of specialist history and stuff from the BBC that you just might like... And digital reception is better than analog.
And, the instruction on EWTN is first rate. I watch very little except for EWTN and FOX/CNN
You might do what we did and wait for a discount, or call and negotiate one yourself. You're paying an extorionist's fee, you might as well get something for that money.
Meanwhile: http://www.ewtn.com/
Click on Television and then Live TV-English (Just make sure the speakers on your computer are "On" and your volume is "High" enough for you to hear.
Sorry you weren't getting EWTN.
I hope this helps.
In Christ, Michael

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
Proudnifi: Abp. Hannan was talking about this as a chastisement on the whole country. Any of the ills he talked about could be blamed on any city in the US. Abortion, pornography, etc. He was not, as some here have, singling out NO for Voodoo, Satanism, sex shops or some of the other taruine foecal matter I've seen on these threads. Given that our city is the port through which much of our country's agricultural goods flow to the world, not to mention all the oil refineries, etc. I would have to think that in Abp. Hannan's viewpoint, it is a chastisement on the whole country not just our city. His viewpoint has been reported in the TP and in the BR newspapers today. He's getting standing ovations from the plain folk here. I know you're younger than me but Abp. Hannan has been around NO most of my life and I trust him. Abp. Hughes was Bp. of BR and came down from Boston. IMHO he does not connect with us. He replaced Bp. Stanley J. Ott in BR. Bp. Ott I knew personally. Bp. Ott was a St. Aloysius grad as was I. Ask your folks if they remember Abp. Cody - Cody and Hughes are very similar.

Re: Archbishop Hannan of NO
Michael: Hi. Most of the churches in NO came out OK. I say most - at least those that were built in the 19th century. Some of the churches on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain built during the present era collapsed. But the historic churches of NO came through OK.
If our cable system offered History International (got to watch that in Salt Lake City last week) and other similar stations it might be worth the added expense. However, EWTN is only available on a 90% sports tier and (from long experience always being a klutz, always being picked last for teams, etc. I simply don't do sports). If it was a WWII movie and I had to tell you who won the world series to live....(whatever), I'd be dead. Between expanded cable and DSL the cable bill is too high already. New Orleans and Lafayette still carry EWTN on the regular TV cable. Because we have our own diocesan TV channel (most of whose programming comes from Boston! [we get to listen to young red headed priests in sweaters] our only serious outlet is when Abp. Hannan comes on. Now the Archdiocese of NO is a channel member of Louisiana Public Broadcasting, so when they're not broadcasting LPB they can do their own programming which doesn't show on LPB but does show on our diocesan TV channel), when it came on the air they moved EWTN to digital.
