Extremely disturbing stuff. Yes, I've seen quite a bit of evidence of this unfortunate trend. It's very sad and rather horrifying. I just don't know what to say. I long for a simpler and more wholesome culture.

"Bug-Chasers"? What, I've never heard of this before, what are there like five people that do this? I really don't see anything wrong with most of it except for the stuff that could be dangerous to the person, such as these so called "bug-chasers" or cutters. But the things like toungue splitting, tattoes, piercings, while sometimes weird, I don't really mind. Not that I have or want any of these things, but I just don't see anything wrong with them.

it's better than tubal ligation or a vasectomy. At least their parts work when they are done.

Actually, most people associated with this lifestyle aren't exactly probably doing without birthcontrol, sterilization, abortion, etc. These bodily mutilations are expressive often of other lifestyle choices of a negative and sinful variety. It's an extremely dark and sinful subculture with Satanic overtones.

I don't see anything morally wrong with the body modification type things (tatoos, piercings, tongue splitting etc.), but I do wonder if, at least in the more extreme cases, they aren't a sign of mental illness.

Re: For some Americans, every day is Halloween
We have to be careful not to judge a person's interior by what they present to the outside world. A person could engage in some forms of tatooing and piercing simply because they are artistic and seeking a means to express themselves.

Isn't this sad and depressing? Basically these people are commiting a form of slow suicide. What in a person's life would cause them to want to die in such a manner?

Re: For some Americans, every day is Halloween
I seem to recall that suspension was a ritual performed by some of the Plains Native Americans. I may be wrong on that, it has been a long time since I studied early Native american cultures.
It is still no anything I would like to do, but there is something to say about pain and religious (or spiritual) experiences. Even the Church thru practices of fasting has connected pain with religious experiences. Think about Maximillian Kolbe. While he was being tortured to death thru starvation and finally the injection of acid, all the while he was singing praises to God and according to witnesses, it intensified as the days progressed.
Now I practice fasting and prayer and yes, while doing this, I do feel closer to God, especially while praying the rosary. I feel the people written about in this article are the extreme, very extreme. We need to be carefully when discussing this and not become judgemental about it.

Re: For some Americans, every day is Halloween
Some of what is written in this article is what was predicted in Humane Vitae. People are not respecting the body that they will have for eternity. I personally think that to mutliate the body that God has given us is seriously wrong whether it is piercing (other than ears once), tattooing, tongue spiliting, vascetomy, and tubligation.
It is time for people to learn JPII Theology of the Body.

oh, but it is! (if you are a guy)
I don't know about that book. It sounds like a bunch of supermarket tabloid stories.
