Here is an account, from the family's perspective, of what happened:

[Jahi's uncle, Omar] Sealey provided a rough timeline of what happened after Jahi's tonsils were removed a week ago. After she asked for a popsicle, [moments after waking up from the surgery,] it became immediately clear that something was wrong.

“She wasn’t able to talk, and she started to write notes to her mother saying I’m swallowing too much mucus, mom – am I OK? Mom – I feel like I’m choking,” Sealey recalled. “And she began to write these notes because she couldn’t talk because there was so much blood – it wasn’t mucus – it was blood. But my sister, the mother, was too afraid to let her know that it was blood and not mucus.”

He said the scene was gruesome: “She was coughing up buckets of blood.”

At the same time, Sealey said it appeared to the family as though the nursing staff had vanished during what seemed to be a shift change. In the family's mind, there didn't seem to be enough hospital staff in the room to help. The family started suctioning blood themselves; Jahi's grandmother, Sandra Chatman, is a nurse at another hospital.

Eternal God , in whom mercy is endless,
and the treasury of compassion inexhastible ,
look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us ,
that in difficult moments we might not despair
nor become despondent , but with great confidence ,
submit ourselves to Your Holy Will ,
which is love and mercy itself . Amen

Memorare (Prayer to Our Lady)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.Amen

This happened to my family as well. My young cousin bleed to death following this procedure in the mid 1970s.

There's no such thing as minor surgery.

I spent two months in hospital, and I can attest to one thing:

Never have a medical emergency during a shift change.

According to the hospital spokesman, the hospital does not have a policy as to ending life support. However, the coroner may request that it be done.

The coroner's office says there is a trade-off involved. Allowing longer life support gives the family more time to grieve. However, the longer life support is continued, the more difficult it is for the coroner to determine cause of death. The body's natural healing may also obscure any medical error.

The mother of Jahi McMath believes that her daughter will recover. Her uncle told reporters that Jahi is "100% brain damaged" and "medically dead." A CT scan yesterday showed that 2/3 of Jahi's brain was swollen. CNN was not able to confirm her uncle's account.

With regard to the possibility of complications, that is true. Which is people need to be fully aware of the risks vs benefits of any procedure. There are no guarantees in life. I feel for the family - hopefully they'll find good support and guidance in navigating their grief.

If Christians had lived up to the Church's teaching about property and poverty there never would have been any occasion for the spurious communism of the Marixists and all the rest - whose communism starts out by denying other men the right to own property.

There is only one true doctrine about property rights, and that is taught by Catholic tradition. Those rights exist and cannot be denied, but they imply an obligation which, if it were put into practice without hypocrisy, self-deception and subterfuge, would mean that most Christians would be living with something like the communism of the first Apostles: "For neither was there any one needy among them..."

I've prayed for her. This is just so sad.

Her family has until 5pm on Monday to arrange for a transfer to another medical facility. They are having trouble finding a hospital which will accept Jahi. A nursing home isn't an option at this point since Jahi does not have the necessary feeding and breathing tubes installed for long term care. Finding a physician who is willing to install such things is likely to be difficult, since she has already been declared dead.

Any medical transfer will be expensive, and insurance will not cover Jahi at this point. The family is seeking donations to help, but seem to be falling far short:

With less than an hour remaining, a judge has ordered an extension to Jahi's life support.

The family says they have located a licensed medical facility which will accept her. They also say they have contracted with an ambulance service to transport her across the country.

The family has received $22,000 in donations to pay for the transfer.
