Default The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe: Chapter 13

Today, we read chapter 13, Deep Magic From the Dawn of Time.

What do you think Aslan said to the White Witch to convince her to take him instead of Edmund? Do you think he had to do much convincing?

I'd imagine he just reminded her of the truths, something like...

As you know, the deep magic also allows one to take another's place...

She would probably get frustrated, "Yeah, yeah, I know, what's your point."

When he got to his point, there probably wasn't much more discussion. She probably didn't even suspect a trick, because in her mind, she would feel she knew everything there was to know about the deep magic, since she had been there since the "beginning."

The talk went on for some time and I think that Aslan tried to get her to voluntarily give up her claim to the traitor. Being wicked she probably had her mind set on Edmund. He had escaped from her power and she wouldn't like that. What a loss of face for her! What a blow to her ego. I bet she fought for him like a dog over a bone, unwilling to let him get away. And then Aslan realized that it was useless to try and get her to give him up so he offered himself instead. He knew that was something she would not refuse, and it would not be going against the Emperor's Magic. At this point she probably couldn't believe her luck and didn't need any persuading. To have Aslan in her power was more than she ever dreamed of.

I imagine that he didn't have to do much convincing at all. When he offered, the Witch was probably shocked, because it seemed to give her the key to victory. After all, she thought that once she killed him, she would be able to kill Edmund as well. I imagine that she was overjoyed, but trying not to show it so that she wouldn't arouse Aslan's suspicions, but that she was also amazed by what seemed to be the utter foolishness of what Aslan was doing.

I agree, it was a life for a life, and Aslan was a bigger victory.
