What did Jesus really look like?
I read an article in a magazine at work that was in the shred pile it was a Popular Mechanics December of 2002. The article was called: "The Rel Face of Jesus", it states that Jesus had short hair, dark eyes and was probably 5' 1" or so had a beard as most men back then did and that the shroud of Turin is a fraud and most men back then weighed an average of 110 pounds, since Jesus worked outside as a carpenter he had a weathered face and probably looked older than he was, and that he was probably muscular and physically fit due to his work as a carpenter, that got me to thinking so if some of this is true, why is Jesus always depicted as tall, somewhat slim and long haired. They say in the article that Saint Paul says in a chapter in 1 Cor. that Paul says long hair on a man was disgraceful. What is your opinion of that? The shroud of Turin shows a long haired man who was crucified. Who is right?

I think I trust the Shroud better than I trust Popular Mechanics.

Re: What did Jesus really look like?
I'm not sure and I could be totally off base with this, but I think he looked like a MAN! Possibly Jewish.

Yes I think we all know he was a man, the part that gets me is how they try to disprove the Shroud of Turin and basically try to shoot down what we believe as Catholics, that's what makes me upset.

Re: What did Jesus really look like?
I think either Jesus was REALLY good looking or a very homely lookin guy. Good lookin probably, cuz He is God and God's perfect. But he could be homely lookin cuz he's oober humble too. Only those who actually saw him really know, eh? Is there any mention of his physical appearance in the Bible?

Just for the sake of discussion, I would speculate that he was good looking and tall compared to his peers -- only because both Saul and David were good looking (Saul the best looking and tallest guy around and David was "ruddy" with "beautiful eyes"), and the NT fulfillment always improves upon the OT prefigurement. Also, charismatic people often tend to be both tall and good looking.
As for the Shroud of Turin, I think it is authentic but am glad that I don't have to accept it with the certainty of faith.
