Alito Filibuster Fails, Final Confirmation Vote Expected Tomorrow
On a 72-25 vote, senators succeeded in passing the 60-vote threshold to prevent a filibuster and allow a simple majority vote Tuesday. At least 57 senators have said publicly they will vote for the nominee.
Alito could be sworn in as early as noon Tuesday, in time for a formal introduction to the nation by President Bush during his State of the Union address Tuesday night. Alito will become the 110 Supreme Court justice, replacing Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Sen. Byrd is right. The Dem. opposition is just so much political grandstanding and everyone knows it. Honestly, do they really think anyone in America (except those who think of Dem talking points are gospel) actually believe that Alito is any kind of threat to anyone's personal freedoms? It's all twaddle and they know it. And that's what really gets me--they know it, but they say it anyway. It's just plain sickening.

Here's the roll-call vote on cloture. And here are the 25 (24 Dems and "independent" Jeffords) who voted against cloture: Bayh, Biden, Boxer, Clinton, Dayton, Dodd, Durbin, Feingold, Feinstein, Jeffords, Kennedy, Kerry, Lautenberg, Leahy, Levin, Menendez, Mikulski, Murray, Obama, Reed, Reid, Sarbanes, Schumer, Stabenow, Wyden.

What is even more sickening is the slander and the outrageous charges they made against the character of Judge Alito. When many lawyers who have worked with him, many of them very liberal, have said he is a good man and does not bring an agenda to the court, I believed them. Just hope people remember this behavior in November, but then, the American electorate has a very short memory.

Have they officially set a time for the vote? According to the article, he could be a Justice by Noon.

Watching Ted Kennedy get red in the face while delivering his tirade on the Senate floor made my day.

Re: Alito Filibuster Fails, Final Confirmation Vote Expected Tomorrow
It's so sad to see Catholic Senators fight so hard against the Alito nomination. But, it will be a time for real rejoicing when Alito finally gets confirmed this afternoon.
