Journey Home
I caught part of the Journey Home on the west coast. One of the guests, Doug Gonzales was telling his conversion story. His wife left him? His story did not end "happily ever after" eh? I caught only bits and pieces.

Re: Journey Home
Maybe you didn't catch this piece: He said that as he watched his wife drive away in the U-Haul with practically all their possessions, a voice in his ear reminded him of what he had said: that even if all he had at the end of the day was Jesus in the Eucharist, that would be enough. The voice asked him, in effect, are you sure about that?
He answered... Yes.
I listened to the first half, and then watched the second half online. Doug Gonzales doesn't mess around!

Re: Journey Home
When was that Journey Home on? I usually try to watch the show but on my guide it showed EWTN having a special in instead of Journey Home. I would love to see that one. Not that I want to see anyone suffer - but to most people a broken marriage means that you are going against God, not towards him.
Was that this week's Journey Home??

Re: Journey Home
I wish that I had seen that one.
I am trying to put myself in the wife' s position but honestly I can't imagine leaving my hubby even if he changed his religion. OF course, I am supposing that he would be respectful and not try to forcibly proselytize me.

Re: Journey Home
I checked at EWTN, and I did see that episode. It must have aired again. It was a good episode. But his wife doesn't leave him, she comes around.

This Journey Home was a special. It's EWTN 25th anniversary so they doing something special for the 'family' of EWTN supporters. It was in California so people can attend it, as was in Denver back in October.
This marriage was broken because Doug wants the FULLNESS of GOD, not the other way around. There IS a difference.
Doug said he consecrated his life to the cross. I guess God is testing him.

Re: Journey Home
CathGal - did you see the show?
I think I saw this at an earlier date. Or else the same man talking with Marcus about a month ago.
First, I do understand the difference. That is why Doug was willing to turn towards God eventhough his wife told him if he turned Catholic at that retreat not to come home. (FYI - I've been there).
Please let me know if I am remembering the right gentleman's story. I thought he a handsome fellow and when he talked it was quite touching. He talked about Our Lady of Fatima and how when he went on his retreat he fell in love with her. And how when he was talking with a lady there was the smell of roses.
I believe, it was after there was almost an accident and there was another instance of the rose scent that convinced his wife. At the time of the interview that I saw, their marriage was still in tact.
Please let me know if I am thinking of a different man's story.

Yep, that's Doug Gonzales. I don't know the outcome of his marriage. This Journey Home was aired either 28 or 29 of January.

Re: Journey Home
I saw it too and it is sad.
If I understand, didn't his wife leave him just because he became Catholic?

Re: Journey Home
I'm not trying to hijack this thread or change the subject, but I also heard him say he consecrated his life to the crucifix, I think. He recommended not doing that because Jesus will hold you to it.
I often hear people say, “I consecrated myself (or my life) to ______”.
Can you consecrate yourself to anything you feel God wants you to, or does the Church have specific teachings regarding this practice?
I just found what he said interesting.

I don't think God wants you to do anything unless you really want to; and it's only because you LOVE HIM enough that you want to give yourself over to HIM. I think that's what Doug did, although I'm not sure if Doug knows what he was getting into at the time.

I find that interesting too, I have been thinking about that "self consecration" subject recently. But I don't know if I can or should commit myself to something like that. I was wondering where someone could find information on that type of thing without commiting oneself to anything.
One thing that I read about consecrating yourself to Mary that bothered me, was that one should do it out of love for Mary not just to benefit oneself. That bothered me, because I am in such a slump now that I think I would be doing it for myself more than anything.
