Default Re: What's your favorite Olympic Winter game?

Good question. Here are my favorites:

OUTDOOR EVENTS:
  1. ALPINE SKIING
  2. BIATHLON
  3. NORDIC COMBINED
  4. FREESTYLE SKIING
  5. SNOWBOARDING
  6. SKI JUMPING
  7. LUGE/SKELETON/BOBSLED
  8. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
I love alpine skiing. Too bad NBC did not cover any of the finals live. CBS' coverage was great for Albertville & Lillehammer. In 1992 and 1994, CBS preempted their CBS Morning Show in order to show Olympic alpine skiing (and other Olympic EVENTS). Every morning, I'd wake up and while I was eating breakfast and getting ready, I'd watch skiing (downhill skiing is my absolute favorite). I was hoping that since the Winter Olympics was back in the Albertville/Lillehammer time zone (Turin, Italy), I would be able to watch alpine skiing live in the morning.

Now I get up in the morning and there's Katie Couric doing some childish stunt.

Biathlon is always fun to watch. USA Network had both the men's and women's biathlon coverage live in the morning. That was my consolation prize this week.

I put cross-country skiing at the bottom, not because it is not among my favorites, but because I like them all.

INDOOR EVENTS:
  1. CURLING
  2. ICE HOCKEY
  3. FIGURE SKATING
  4. SPEED SKATING/SHORT TRACK
Curling has to be the best winter sport, hands down.

Don't know. I am not watching it. And from a new report I read. Looks like I am not the only one.

Yes, you are right, NBC's primetime coverage of the Olympics has been not that great. It has been schizophrenic, to say the least. NBC has speed skating for 15 minutes, then figure skating for 15 minutes, snowboarding for 15 minutes, alpine skiing for 15 minutes, short-track for 15 minutes, luge for 15 minutes... then back to speed skating for 15 minutes, alpine skiing for 15 minutes, snowboarding for 15 minutes, figure skating for 15 minutes....

Can anyone take it for 3 1/2 hours? Little snippets of coverage here, there, everywhere! AHHH! Not to mention, all you need to do is go on the internet and you can get all the results.

Thankfully tonight, the men's figure skating has been on for sometime now. Oops, I spoke too soon.

Advice to CBS:

(1) Cover speed skating and figure skating on primetime (tape delayed).

(2) Cover the outdoor events LIVE! When we win an outdoor medal, have a short recap of it during primetime, after the speed skating/figure skating.

(3) Hockey and curling are getting plenty of live coverage. NBC is doing a good job there.

Moguls (we Aussies just won our third ever gold medal just a few days ago!) and luge - that track is just chewing them up and spitting them out this time around! and I would be in danger of becoming an addict if we had more than about 2-3 hours of coverage a day.

Cheers

I get the best of both words, I work the forums while watching what DH has tivoed, so we skip through the endless canonization process for athletes who are not dead yet, and go straight to the events. This also helps us to avoid this crazy coverage style showing blips of each event. He just fast forwards so we watch all or most of the skating event, then we go back and just watch the downhill trials etc.

I know it is driving him nuts that you can't just watch a hockey game, watch one skating event etc. With DSL sports package he bought I guess he also has some coverage that is not NBC (clearly edited and packaged for American audiences, you can't tell me the entire world had to endure that ghastly inappropriate music for the opening ceremonies)

I can't! Which is why I'm watching it on the USA channel, and on the French language Canadian channel.

Just because of the times of day I have available for TV-viewing, I tend to be watching a lot of curling! I'd love to give curling a try, but I don't know if there's any place near me that even has it available.

There is a new snowboard sport. I don't remember the name. Five people snowboard to the bottom of hill, racing, blocking, overtaking each other. It's wild. I like that.

Downhill skiing scares me. The moguls are fun.

I can get into luge, skeleton, and bobsledding; but they are having a lot of accidents.

Since Emmanuel Sandhu bombed -- in my opinion due to lack of training -- I am not watching figure skating. Congratulations to Jeffrey Buttle for working hard and leaving it on the ice even though he doesn't have a quad.

When I lived in another city, I used to get the CBC. They do a great job covering the Olympics. I miss my CBC.
