Default spare time

I have a job where I'm out of town 50 or so nights a year. Rather then watch tv I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for something good I could be doing for the church. I've thought of starting an online learning website for rcia or helping at charities etc. Any ideas for a person with 100-200 hours a year to give?

It is really tough to participate in parish life when you're gone all the time. One thing is make sure your priest knows the situation at your home parish. The parishes you spend half time in, let them know too. Some will pretty much say all you can do is tithe, but I don't think that's the answer. Let them know when you'll be around and what you can offer. You could be on a fill in list, but that's hard when travelling too. I like the website idea, if you are able to design and keep up with that.

It depends a lot on whether you always travel to the same place or not and if you have a. A pretty set schedule. That has been my experience. My schedule was pretty set, though, and always to the same place, so I had an every other week CCD class for awhile.

As you surely know, it is more difficult to be helpful to strangers than it is to neighbors, but often not easy in either case. Yet your constructive posts and blogs can be helpful to many, and your reading (maybe even some TV) will improve your knowledge and value to others. Some parishes have Small Church Community Groups you can visit with, and in other areas you might seek discussion groups at the library or a project at a local non-Catholic charity if Catholic Charities has no suitable projects. Have you considered visiting shut-ins as a Caregiver?

The website sounds like a nice idea, you're using your talents and knowledge and sharing those things with others.

Perhaps you can go and help out at a nearby shelter, serving a hot meal to those who maybe be homeless and sitting and having a friendly chat to them. This could even be something to do in addition to your website.
