Default Best Catholic news sources

Hi All!

Frequently threads pop up here on CAF cited from different Catholic news sources. Sometimes, members will mention that a particular source is liberal or biased in some manner.

My question for you, are there some "gold standard" Catholic news sources? What are the better ones? I get emails from: CWN, Catholic Culture.org, National Catholic Register and Catholic World News.

Thank you for your comments!

I mostly go to NewAdvent.org as their front page curates Catholic-related news from many different Catholic news sources, as well as articles from mainstream news sources. But then, you have to realize you're basically letting one guy (Kevin Knight) feed you your news stories. I tend to think he does a good job, but that's a limitation.

I get annoyed with Catholic Culture's news blurbs as the stories I tend to come across there seem to be one paragraph that heightens your interest with no further sources given. But maybe that's not the norm. I don't go there often for news (I go there more often for their website reviews).

I like National Catholic Register.

Cruxnow (at least the stuff from John Allen) is generally pretty good. He worked for years at the National Catholic Reporter (which I do not recommend), which would lead me to believe he'd be firmly on the theologically liberal side of the spectrum. But you can't really tell from his reporting as he doesn't (often) let his biases creep into his articles. Which is, I think, the hallmark of a good reporter. He has lots of Vatican connections, so his stuff analyzing the Vatican is pretty interesting.

Whispers in the Loggia is good, too, for looking at the goings on of the Church. It's the first place I go to find out about new bishop appointments and what those new bishops are like. He's very balanced and avoids turning everything into a liberal vs. conservative narrative.

I like Crisis on many occasions, but they are definitely more editorial in their coverage of many things, which is not always helpful.

Of course, Vatican News is a good place to go, especially for those times you are seeking to find exactly what Pope Francis said in context.

CNS (Catholic News Service) is connected to the USCCB, so they are generally going to be a good source.

I imagine EWTN News is a good place to go, though I seldom think to go there.

Catholic World Report is generally pretty good, too.

I actively avoid LifeSiteNews. (Sorry if anyone's a fan—I am not.) They editorialize to the point of being misleading, and they have way too many negative pieces on the pope (which, again, are often very misleading).

I'm sure there is more I am forgetting.

Patheos does not pretend to be an orthodox Catholic source. It's primarily an online portal for blogs from a whole host of religious (and non-religious) perspectives. They have Buddhist, Mormon, Catholic, Muslim, Pagan, Nonreligious, etc. channels, with a number of different bloggers contributing to each channel. Think of it like a religiously themed BlogSpot. You don't expect every blog on BlogSpot.com to come from a singular, uniform point of view. Same thing with Patheos.

Thus, on their Catholic channel, they have the blogs of Mark Shea, Dave Armstrong, Marc Barnes, Eve Tushnet, Greg Popcak, Fr. Dwight Longnecker, Elizabeth Scalia, and many others. All in all, they have nearly 60 Catholic bloggers. And that's just the Catholics.

So, each blog is only going to be as good as the one writing it, which makes it a bit of a mixed bag. Some of them are good. Some of them are not so good.

In general, though, blogs aren't the best place to go for news. You are almost always only getting second-hand commentary about a news item. Now, that can be helpful in some cases, but they're not a news source per se.

I second Whispers in the Loggia. Catholic Herald/The Tablet for UK. In the US, National Catholic Register is more Conservative-leaning and will have more articles on life and doctrinal issues. It is best paired with National Catholic Reporter which is more Liberal-leaning and will have more on social justice and pastoral issues. Many US dioceses are subscribed to both NCRs.

Crux - I mostly read John L. Allen Jr.'s columns
https://cruxnow.com/

Catholic News Service (CNS) - News agency run by the US Bishop's Conference (USCCB)

Zenit - News agency from Rome.
https://zenit.org/

Rome Reports - Great Papal news videos from Rome.
https://www.youtube.com/user/romereports/videos

Asianews.it - Specializes on news from Asia and the Middle East.

How could I forget Zenit! Yes, they are a good source for news from the Vatican.
