Default 666 in Revelations and Star of David

I started a thread in the non-Catholic section hoping for some references:

https://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=1045963

My specific question for this thread is:

When did the number 666 start being referred to as the number of Satan?

The young lad I had been talking to is adamant that 666 is the number of Satan.

I had told him, the first Christians had a different understanding of this number to refer to Nero.

Anyway, I would like to cite information that the 666 referring to Satan is a new interpretation.

Just a note, on the Star of David, he is stating the symbol is somehow tied to the 666, and I have found websites that espouse this conspiracy theory.

Any references would certainly help.

Thanks.

The number 666 is indirectly associated with Satan in the book of Revelation. The number 666 is mentioned in Revelation 13:18, as "the number of the beast." This "beast" seems to be the first beast, mentioned in Rev. 13:1-10, who is often identified as the Antichrist. Of this first beast, it is said, "And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority." (Rev. 13:2) This "dragon" seems to be the "dragon" mentioned in Rev. 12:9," And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Stan, the deceiver of the whole world..."

There's a "cottage industry" in the conspiracy community about 666. I have heard speakers claim to find it in product logos, Trinitarian symbols used on bibles, food bar codes, the logo of the Postal Service, just anywhere. Websites promoting such ideas are good to stay away from.

Hi Tarpeian...I am staying away indeed. It is this lad that I am trying to wean away from such sites.

If I can somehow show him that those promoting that 666 refers to satan is not how early the Christians understood it, I am hoping to somehow trigger something in him that what he reads such connections is a novel idea.

Thanks for this insight Todd.

I have come across scholastic papers that interpret 666 to be reference to Nero, and this would be how the early Christians would have understood the number.

I am trying to get a sense as to when the 666 began to be understood as a reference to Satan.

Thanks.
