I would like to suggest that the tag feature be disabled. It doesn't serve any purpose since there already is a search feature. I think the forums would be better off without it.

How do I use tags?

Tags are displayed in a box near the bottom of a thread page. Clicking on a tag will allow you to view other threads that have the same tag - and which may be related. Clicking on the word 'Tags' in the top of the box will take you to an overview page with a 'tag cloud.'

This cloud allows you to see which tags are the most popular - the larger the word, the more times it has been used on threads within the board. There is also another tag cloud on the advanced search page that shows you the tags that have been searched for (or clicked on) the most.

thank you! I think I had seen the word before, but never knew what it meant or if you could click on it.
it actually seems like a good feature.
whenever I use the regular search feature it keeps coming back - sorry. no search results found.

I would bet that 95% or more of CAF threads don't even have tags, so for me, I think the feature is pointless. I would never do a search using it.

You can add tags, and then you can use them.

Directly underneath the last post on a thread you will see the word "tags". I guess it
directs you to related threads. I have never tried it.

I've mostly seen tags used as an underhanded way to insult certain posters. You can't see who added them (maybe mods can.)

How can they do that?

The same way you would add a normal tag - at the bottom of the thread to the right there's an option to "edit tag." A poster can tag using whatever words they want. I'll put one on and you can see if you find it. I don't think you'll be able to see that I did it - you'll only know because I told you right now.

Oh I see. The bottom tags and you can edit it?

Yes. Any user (I believe) can add a tag that will be visible by anyone who views the thread. But it won't be visible who added the tag. Some threads will get tagged with mean comments about the OP, for instance, or about other posters in the thread, and that can be done relatively anonymously.

Since you can privately subscribe to threads, and because of how thorough the search function already is, I would agree with the OP that tagging isn't necessary, and perhaps harmful because of how I've regularly seen them used here.

I think the forum would be better off without these, because unfortunately some posters are using them to insult people and the problem outweighs the benefit. I suggest reporting them when you find them - the mods removed 3 on some threads I posted on, as they are uncharitable and break forum rules.
