1 Peter 2:9

1 Peter 2:9 (New King James Version)

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light

A Protestant was trying to claim that all Christians are and have the power of priests according to this verse. What do Catholics say to that?

There were priests in ancient Israel, while at the same time there were Levite Priests. Read the story of the Good Samaritan - the injured man is passed up by both a Levite and a priest.

But, notice that the priests couldn’t perform the Sacrifices at the Temple. They could only perform certain functions, but only the Levites were able to offer up Sacrifices in the Temple.

Its not much different than what the Catholic Church is today, eh?

Tell your friend he’s “in the right Church, but the wrong Pew”!

Rev. 1:6 He has made us a kingdom and priests and the faithful exercise their baptismal priesthood through their participation, each according to his own vocation… Through the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation the faithful are “consencrated to be a holy priesthood” (CCC 1546).
