As a father of 4, aged 18-31, and a former employee of a school, I’ve sure seen a lot of kids in and out of trouble, but news of two has been weighing on me lately. God Bless the social workers and religious who work especially with these tragic lives; may they also be blessed and strengthened.
The first is Emily, who has alcoholic parents (mother now in recovery) and sang beautiful songs she had written herself at a High School coffeehouse a few years ago, but is now a prostitute and heroin addict in a very dangerous part of the city. She was badly beaten on her recent birthday. She is in occasional contact with her mother, who told us of her. God Bless this mother who is in recovery herself, and the hope she holds for her daughter, and the prayers she offers herself.
The second is Morgan, who has a quiet and gentle nature, but is addicted to benzodiazapines, ecstasy, and possibly, heroin. She has two alcoholic parents, both in recovery, but the mother is mentally ill and dying. Heroin addicts can live a long time, but her other addictions are fast-track brain killlers. She was unable finish high school and has never been able to hold a job. She has recently become a missing person.
They’re both about 20 years old. They’re just the tiniest examples of the almost inconceivable world of suffering that surrounds us, yet they are whole worlds and lives unto themselves, and to their families.
May all be blessed. May all be saved.
