21 reasons to be an Atheist

#1

I’ve glossed over a few Atheist sites. One of them listed 300 proofs for the existence of God - I got a chuckle from a couple of them. So, I have decided to waste time by countering their arguments.

 1. God can’t make a rock bigger than He can lift. Therefore, God does not exist.

 2. I have looked through my telescope countless times. I have never seen God. Therefore, God does not exist.

 3. There are many different religions. All of them can’t be correct, but all of them could be wrong. Therefore, God does not exist.

 4. Death exists. Suffering exists. Disease exists. Natural disasters exist. God is mean. Therefore, God does not exist.

 5. Scientists have proven that there is no God. Like, they probably have a mathematical formula for it, and stuff. Therefore, God does not exist.

 6. Our current society proves there are no moral absolutes. Therefore, God does not exist.

 7. There are no absolute truths (except that God does not exist). Therefore, God does not exist.

 8. Religion causes wars. Therefore, God does not exist.

 9. The Catholic Church has tortured and killed X(number of) people. Where X approaches the number of people ever born. Therefore, God does not exist.

 10. Many smart people are Atheists. I am smart. Therefore, God does not exist.

 11. I enjoy jeering at stupid Christians. Therefore, God does not exist.

 12. George Carlin is an Atheist. He is hilarious. Therefore, God does not exist.

 13. Sin is fun. Therefore, God does not exist.

 14. Rules suck. Therefore, God does not exist.

 15. The Bible doesn’t make sense to me. Therefore, God does not exist.

 16. I commanded God to smite me, once. He did not smite me. Therefore, God does not exist.

 17. Hell does not exist. Therefore, God does not exist.

 18. Assume that God does not exist. Then, death is not so scary. Therefore, God does not exist.

 19. My parents lied to me about Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. They could have lied about God, too. Therefore, God does not exist.

 20. God does not exist (Theist raises eyebrow). No, seriously. Therefore, God does not exist.

 21. “Evil will always triumph over Good, because Good is dumb.”. Therefore, God does not exist. (Quote from the movie Spaceballs)

This was C. S. Lewis’ reason before he converted. He also said that while he was an atheist he was very angry with God because He did not exist. Ha!

I’ll comment on these just for fun. My answers are not aimed at the original poster, but at the “arguments” (which, I understand, are not the OPs).

***1. God can’t make a rock bigger than He can lift. Therefore, God does not exist.

If God could make a rock bigger than He could lift, how would that prove His existence?

***2. I have looked through my telescope countless times. I have never seen God. Therefore, God does not exist.

I have never seen a thought either, nor a memory.

***3. There are many different religions. All of them can’t be correct, but all of them could be wrong. Therefore, God does not exist.

Or, one of them could be correct and the others wrong to a greater or lesser degree. Sort of like the answer to a simple math problem.

***4. Death exists. Suffering exists. Disease exists. Natural disasters exist. God is mean. Therefore, God does not exist.

One of my favorites. I’d ask the person to describe a world in which there was no suffering, no disease, no injury, no death. Try it, it’s a sobering exercise! We would all become selfish uncaring louts, because giving and caring would have no meaning.

***5. Scientists have proven that there is no God. Like, they probably have a mathematical formula for it, and stuff. Therefore, God does not exist.

Show the proof.

***6. Our current society proves there are no moral absolutes. Therefore, God does not exist.

Show the proof.

***7. There are no absolute truths (except that God does not exist). Therefore, God does not exist.

I like that exception. Another exception is the absolute truth that there are no absolute truths.

***8. Religion causes wars. Therefore, God does not exist.

The major 20th century wars were not religious.

***9. The Catholic Church has tortured and killed X(number of) people. Where X approaches the number of people ever born. Therefore, God does not exist.

Show the proof that for X > some number, God cannot exist, but for X < some number, He can.

***10. Many smart people are Atheists. I am smart. Therefore, God does not exist.

No comment.

***11. I enjoy jeering at stupid Christians. Therefore, God does not exist.

Guess that goes with being smart…

***12. George Carlin is an Atheist. He is hilarious. Therefore, God does not exist.

***13. Sin is fun. Therefore, God does not exist.

***14. Rules suck. Therefore, God does not exist.

Definitely getting close to the root of the problem here, for many people.

***15. The Bible doesn’t make sense to me. Therefore, God does not exist.

It makes sense to the Church. What then?

***16. I commanded God to smite me, once. He did not smite me. Therefore, God does not exist.

Or, God cannot be commanded.

***17. Hell does not exist. Therefore, God does not exist.

Wishful thinking?

***18. Assume that God does not exist. Then, death is not so scary. Therefore, God does not exist.

What if that makes death more scary? Does He exist for those people?

***19. My parents lied to me about Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. They could have lied about God, too. Therefore, God does not exist.

Do people devote their lives to Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy? Do people who do not believe in the former believe in God?

***20. God does not exist (Theist raises eyebrow). No, seriously. Therefore, God does not exist.

I’m impressed.

***21. “Evil will always triumph over Good, because Good is dumb.”. Therefore, God does not exist. (Quote from the movie Spaceballs)

What about the banality of evil? How does that enter in?

Oops. Sorry folks. I forgot the disclaimer.

DISCLAIMER: This is meant as a joke, even if, a bad one. The arguments against each item were supposed to be self evident.

BTW. Theists, feel free to add to the list.

I know many of the objections are joke material, but I think some are quite seriously asserted (though atheists would express them in a more persuasive manner). Even the funny ones contain a germ of argument for some people. It was really those serious arguments, even if humorously packaged, that I was addressing, because what is self-evident to believers is not self-evident to atheists. The joke ones just rounded out the list.

I have heard that an Athest had tried to use the Bible to prove there is no God by going to Psalm 14 where part of verse 1 says

“There is no God”

If course, they fail to mention is that the full passage says:
The fool says in his heart,
"There is no God."
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds,
there is none that does good.

I like that one! For that argument to have any authority it requires scripture to be inerrant. How does that work without God?

God made atheists,

atheists exist,

atheists believe in Satan;

God made Satan,

Satan exists,

God frightens atheists and Satan,

Therefore God exists.

#10

allright Stevereeno, you’ve convinced me

I’m outta here

kevin posted:

‘atheists believe in Satan’

i doubt it.

If there are people like Michael Moore and others like him, God cannot exist.
Heaven?
But in our fallen state would heaven be heaven for us, or hell? If, here on earth, there was no suffering of any kind, then how would we behave? Would we be better off, or worse? Would we be more holy, more Godlike, or less?

Once we are perfected then the entire situation changes, of course.

Just a comment on a few of them:

I can roll a snowball larger than I can lift, therefore I am God.

 1. I have looked through my telescope countless times. I have never seen God. Therefore, God does not exist.

I think I saw some angels in the neighbors bedroom, though.

 1. I enjoy jeering at stupid Christians. Therefore, God does not exist.

We stupid Christians also enjoy jeering at stupid Christians. Therefore, we are sinful.

 1. George Carlin is an Atheist. He is hilarious. Therefore, God does not exist.

You got me there. Has anybody not heard his edition of the Ten Commandments?

 1. Sin is fun. Therefore, God does not exist.

We wish, sometimes.

 1. Rules suck. Therefore, God does not exist.

We wish, sometimes.

 1. The Bible doesn’t make sense to me. Therefore, God does not exist.

Neither does the Internal Revenue Code. Therefore, taxes don’t exist.

 1. I commanded God to smite me, once. He did not smite me. Therefore, God does not exist.

Or God doesn’t hear your prayers.

 1. Assume that God does not exist. Then, death is not so scary. Therefore, God does not exist.

I like that. Honest and utilitarian.
