25% VAT Tax for Health Care Proposed on Capital Hill

Ah, yes, you are correct. I was remembering the old Imperial quarts, which were bigger.

Still, at the grocery store now it’s over $4 for a 2-litre carton. Which is about $7.79 US per US gallon.

(I have no idea how much that works out to in pounds sterling per Imperial gallon, or in florins per firkin. :D)

And Americans call **us **“socialist”?

Even if the percentage is lower, how much do you want to bet that the total dollars paid by the wealthy are higher? And consider the property taxes that the wealthy are paying. Those two alone may dwarf what any middle class person makes in gross wages.

I still like the VAT tax because of its simplicity and lack of loopholes. With VAT, you have to pay when you buy something and everyone pays the same percentage. Do away with the present income tax structure, which is unfair to those who do not know how to game the system.

For an example of loopholes available to the wealthy, consider the Clintons:: "To reduce the tax pinch, the Clintons are using financial planning strategies befitting the top 1 percent of U.S. households in wealth. These moves, common among multimillionaires, will help shield some of their estate from the tax that now tops out at 40 percent of assets upon death.

IMHO, it would be fairer to have one tax which would apply to everyone equally without any loopholes at all.

The problem is, none of the supporters of the VAT in congress want to replace the income tax. They want the VAT + income tax.

This discussion thread was started in 2009, and had been dead for the past five years. I am not sure why it was resurrected, since I don’t think a VAT is being actively considered by Congress.

Thanks for the link.

Right. That’s not what I want.

That’s exactly what I was about to say.

2009 folks. That’s when the VAT issue was raised, and that’s when it died.

No one is proposing a VAT now.

I support it, but not the income tax. Things change in politics and sometimes run in cycles.

I saw it as well. I don’t know why the thread was resurrected. I joined in because it seemed the present discussion was general in nature. Things had moved beyond the OP to a more general discussion.
