A new, liberal tea party is forming. Can it last without turning against Democrats?

Grass-roots movements can be the life and death of political leaders.

It’s a well-worn story now about how John A. Boehner, then House minority leader, joined a rising star in his caucus, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, in April 2009 for one of the first major tea party protests in the California Republican’s home town of Bakersfield.

A little more than six years later, after they surfed that wave into power, the movement consumed both of them. Boehner was driven out of the House speaker’s office and McCarthy’s expected succession fell apart, leaving him stuck at the rank of majority leader.

Democrats are well aware of that history as they try to tap the energy of the roiling liberal activists who have staged rallies and marches in the first three weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency.

What if they can fuse these protesters, many of whom have never been politically active, into the liberal firmament? What if a new tea party is arising, with the energy and enthusiasm to bring out new voters and make a real difference at the polls, starting with the 2018 midterm elections?

The conservative “Tea Party” movement hearkened back to the protest known as the “Boston Tea Party” – where “protesters” tossed boxes of heavily taxed British Tea off moored merchant ships into Boston Harbor (all while dressed as Indians).

But the 21st century version generally did not involve such theft, vandalism or ethnic smearing.

AND the drinking of actual TEA became part of the culture to some.

If there were a LIBERAL T-party … what would be their T of choice?

Any of these? Or … take your pick.

It’s just ONE letter in the alphabet … but in drug slang … apparently … T can stand for …

With fuel like any of the above, such a T-party might be a party of its own end … and never get back around to the political “solutions” *< (yes, scare quotes indicate I don’t think they’d be real or beneficial solutions) * they’d set out to foist upon the rest of us.

The fact that such a party might turn against the Democrats (too) is not much solace to me. I’d fear they’d be turning TO something even ***worse. ***

:nerd: - If such were indeed possible!

I was perhaps thinking of one of Mr. Obama’s final acts as President. Freeing or lessening the sentence of dozens of convicted drug dealers just before Trump’s inauguration.

tea party - To smoke marijuana

… probably predates the modern conservative Tea Party’s inception chronologically.

Oh, I get it. So now they’re starting to realize that violence, assault and rioting are not the answer and we get a :bighanky: piece that gets back to the organizational level of things.

Just one problem: The TEA PARTY formed after the “hope and change” Obama Administration went into the ideological trenches of status quo.

Also—the TEA PARTY protesters cleaned up after themselves. The others…not so much.

Check the history of the conservative “TEA Party.” It is a remnant of the “Citizens Councils” - also known as the “White Citizens Councils” that existed in the South to oppose integration. When the “White Citizens Councils” became negative because of the advance of civil rights, it became the “Citizens Councils.” When that was no longer acceptable because of its racism and they vanished away to virtually nothing, they became the "TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party which was a virtually unknown band of idiots. Then it took advantage of idiots when President Obama held the Executive Office. Do your research into these people.

Yes and no…

The Tea Party is a large semi-grassroots political action organization that started forming almost immediately after Obama was elected. It is very large and consists of many subgroups and factions. More like semi-grassroots because the Tea Party does get a lot of financial support and logistical help through organizations like Freedomworks and the Koch Brothers.

Since the Tea Party is so large and varied, it’s difficult to really say what they support in terms of issues and policies. In the most general sense, they’re opposed to government, particularly the federal government. They don’t like taxation, universal healthcare, the size of the federal government, actions taken during the financial crisis like TARP, etc.

While the Tea Party is opposed to a number issues or ideas, rarely do they say what they’re actually for and in terms of policy, they rarely if ever state actual goals.

For example, they’re opposed to the federal government and one of their goals would presumably be the reduction in the size of government. But as far as I’m aware they’ve never actually expressed a feasible way to reduce government.

For this reason, while the Tea Party is strong, it’s often viewed as a sort of fringe group that is very difficult to work with. It started out as a kind of populist flavor of libertarianism, before being taken over by neo-conservatives sometime in 2010 or 2011. Some of the conservatives involved indeed were from the CofCC and are white supremecists but a good chunk of of Tea party members are regular good conservative people.

I don’t agree they are a fringe group, as they almost always consist of everyday, ordinary Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life.

The “fringe” comes with their butting heads against the political establishment.

The solutions for the TEA PARTY are lower taxes, less unnecessary regulations and a return to Constitutional government.

I suspect that the spoilt children who are rioting are convincing many more voters not to vote Democrat than they are mobilising for the Democrats.

I’d like to see the Liberals create their own party so that it gives a chance for the old working class Christian ethos to be part of the Democratic movement again. For a very long time now they have been sidelined from political influence but are provisionally kept around for their votes.

Which is why in their millions, many have joined the Republicans.

The article points out what could be a significant difference.

The conservative tea party came of age in reaction not only to Obama but, before that, to what the movement considered a betrayal by George W. Bush’s White House and a majority of congressional Republicans when they supported the 2008 Wall Street bailout.

The article goes on to say that there is no similar original sin for Democrats. The liberal protests have grown as a reaction to Trump.

And what better way for today’s new liberal tea party to put the brakes on one Donald J Trump and to eventually send him packing than by them supporting Democrats.

There is no liberal tea party. These protests are bought and paid for.

All Democrats can do, other than admit that they are seriously out of touch with the American people, is create drama through violence and identity politics.

We had that in the 60s - the SDS, Weather Underground, etc. etc. etc.
