Absolute Failure

#1

Long before I was born, an uncle of mine converted from the CC to the Seventh-Day Adventist church. Early on in my lifetime (since I went to Catholic school) we would discuss the Bible and the differing interpretations of it.

It has been my life-long desire to bring him back to Catholicism.

Now I am 21, and last night I attempted to create a case for a few Catholic Beliefs.

One was the possibility of an immediate heaven after death. I showed him the story of the Rich man and Lazarus, the quotes from Revelation, etc etc etc… I couldn’t break him. Then, he showed me all the quotations in the Bible against tradition.

I know that when the Bible condemns something, it often doesn’t condemn the practice itself, just the abuse of it, so it hasn’t really shaken my faith. But, it just seems like the Bible is so lopsided against tradition, and against an immediate heaven after death…

I feel like I’ve failed… I don’t think I’ll ever even make a decent case for Catholicism, let alone make it seem the truest Christian denomination… ugh…

Speaking from experience with SDA’s it is impossible to tell them anything concerning the bible. They have an answer to everything, can quote chapter and verse on why the Catholic church is “wrong”. I have learned that as far as SDA’s and Catholics, they get along like oil and water when it comes to bible interpretation. They feel the world is going to end next week or real soon anyway. And then they’ll show you in the bible where it says so.It is like beating a dead horse, and the only thing I can say is continue to pray for them, but don’t make yourself crazy.

Wow! I couldn’t disagree with you more. All the evidence is on your side my friend. www.scripturecatholic.com

is a great site to find the scriptural evidence for our faith.

Here’s a link on Tradition:
scripturecatholic.com/oral_tradition.html

Sabbath:

Unfortunately, I am totally unfamiliar with SDA’s and there theology so I can’t help you beyond that.

They love to quote the Bible out of context. Consider that Paul says to “hold fast to tradition whether by letter or by word of mouth”. So either the Bible contradicts itself or they are wrong in their interpretation. NEVER accept the sda interpretation of anything at face value. Also note that they doctor quotes of Catholic sources, so check those too.
