All Humans Descend from Adam and Eve

#1

The Church teaches that all humans descend from Adam and Eve and that all humans, because we are their descendents, have inherited their Original Sin. Can anyone speak about or direct me to studies that show the DNA and genetic evidence that all humans descend from one man and one woman? Thanks!

#2

Sorry, there isn’t any. Actually the molecular evidence is that humans descend from many more than one man and one woman.

This article shows some interesting research on the matter:

"Mitochondrial Eve"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_Eve

#4

If that were the case, we would all be a result of incest and would likely look nothing like Adam and Eve , due to generation after generation of uncontrolled genetic mutations!

#5

The concept of Mitochondrial Eve does not mean that we are all descended from one woman in any single generation. Sorry.

The Church, however, does not precisely define who or what “Adam and Eve” are. In this section on the creation of man,
vatican.va/archive/catechism/p1s2c1p6.htm
…the word Adam only apprears a few times in one paragraph out of that whole section.

Reading the Catechism is something that must be done with an eye toward the subtle nuances it contains.

PLEASE don’t get hec2 started on this topic. He can be assertive!

**Just remember that there could have easily been a theological Adam and Eve - the two first “humans” with souls. **
More importantly, no amount of science will be in contradiction with the truth.

#8

Not. Incest was necessary for Adam to be the father of all men. God created Adam and Eve with preternatural gifts. Their genes were idea and would not have produced the effects you claim.

#9

Yes, I know that. The research does apply to the study of the topic, however.

In what way?

The original poster wanted genetic and DNA evidence relating to human origins. This certainly fits the profile, even if it doesn’t necessarily point to a single human ancestor.

Quote from OP:
"Can anyone speak about or direct me to studies that show the DNA and genetic evidence that all humans descend from one man and one woman?"
Mitochondrial Eve is irrelevant to that request. What possible relevance has Mitochondrial Eve, or Y-chromosome Adam, or X-chromosome MRCA or the DRB-1 MRCA to that question? None.

Tsk, Tsk. Haven’t brushed up on your biology, have you?

Genetic mutations occur when there is a deficiency of genes within a given generation. Odviously, Adam and Eve contained all genes within mankind, so this problem of genetic deficency would not be a problem as we have today. Therefore, incest would cause no mutations or mental retardation within the offspring, until much later, after their progeny would have already spread over the landscape.

Not quite

"Mutations can be caused by copying errors in the genetic material during cell division, by exposure to ultraviolet or ionizing radiation, chemical mutagens, or viruses, or can occur deliberately under cellular control during processes such as hypermutation."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutations

“All genes within mankind” ?

Err, no. Variations of genes, as well as new genes (de novo mutation), are constantly being created. This of course says nothing about the addition and subtration of existing genes in subsequent generations.

No. Incest would still cause noticeable effects and cumilate over subsequent generations extremely quickly as lack of genetic diversity.

We did not all descend from Adam and Eve

There are none. At no time was the human population as low as one breeding pair (or four breeding pairs after the Flood). The lowest figure I have seen is 1,000 breeding pairs about 70,000 years ago after the Toba eruption. However, even then it is more likely that the number was closer to 10,000 breeding pairs. The figure of 1,000 is the exteme low end of the range.

Mitochondrial Eve is not relevant here as she was one of a population, it is just that the other women in that population have no descendants in the exclusively female line.

For Toba see The Toba Catastrophe and the references and links in that article.

Incorrect

  1. When, however, there is question of another conjectural opinion, namely polygenism, the children of the Church by no means enjoy such liberty. For the faithful cannot embrace that opinion which maintains that either after Adam there existed on this earth true men who did not take their origin through natural generation from him as from the first parent of all, or that Adam represents a certain number of first parents. Now it is no no way apparent how such an opinion can be reconciled with that which the sources of revealed truth and the documents of the Teaching Authority of the Church propose with regard to original sin, which proceeds from a sin actually committed by an individual Adam and which, through generation, is passed on to all and is in everyone as his own. - Humane Generis

Inbreeding does not cause mutations.

If you want to believe that man kind is the result of incest…then you go right ahead and believe that…thankfully, most people recognize that Adam and Eve is just a story of ancient mans vision of how the human race had it’s start.
