Am I excused from Sunday Mass obligation?

I live a bit over 4 miles from the nearest church and have no means of transportation except to walk, which takes me over an hour. In addition, frequently large dogs roam the streets. The pastor has said “don’t worry about it, as long as you are not making an excuse to miss.” Is he correct?

Dear P,

I don’t know your age or the state of your health. But if your health permits it, you are not excused. There are spray cans to ward off dogs. Get one.

If you had to walk an hour to buy groceries each week, you would do it. Mass has much more to offer you than groceries.

Fr. V incent Serpa, O.P.
