Answering a Mormon

#1

A friend of mine, who is a relatively new convert to Catholicism, posted a question on a forum talking about the one true Church. A Mormon answered his post talking about Joseph Smith, etc. I was wondering if anyone could help me countering the Mormon’s claims.

This is what he said:

As noted, the Bible does clearly say that Jesus Christ built a church:

[quote]And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matt 16:18

I do believe that knowing what “Rock” this verse speaks of leads to the identification of the true church.

The RCC claim is well known, but one must also consider the evidences of the “Great Apostasy”.

My own faith is that the true Church was restored by the Prophet Joseph Smith. The Rock spoken of in Matt 16:18 is the rock of revelation.

“Jesus in his teaching says upon this rock I will build My church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. What rock? Revelation.” --Joseph Smith on 22 January 1843

But notice what was revealed to the Prophet Joseph concerning who is the true church:

67 Behold, this is my doctrine—whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church.
68 Whosoever declareth more or less than this, the same is not of me, but is against me; therefore he is not of my church. --D&C 10
Clearly Christ keeps track of those who truly become true disciples to Him, no matter what earthly organization they belong to. Christ will eventually have “one fold”, but not yet.

It is interesting to read more from the above D&C 10 revelation:

[quote]
Quote:
—D&C 10 Revelation recieved the Summer of 1828
53 And for this cause have I said: If this generation harden not their hearts, I will establish my church among them.
54 Now I do not say this to destroy my church, but I say this to build up my church;
55 Therefore, whosoever belongeth to my church need not fear, for such shall inherit the kingdom of heaven.
56 But it is they who do not fear me, neither keep my commandments but build up churches unto themselves to get gain, yea, and all those that do wickedly and build up the kingdom of the devil—yea, verily, verily, I say unto you, that it is they that I will disturb, and cause to tremble and shake to the center.
57 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I came unto mine own, and mine own received me not.
58 I am the light which shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not.
59 I am he who said—Other sheep have I which are not of this fold—unto my disciples, and many there were that understood me not.
60 And I will show unto this people that I had other sheep, and that they were a branch of the house of Jacob;
61 And I will bring to light their marvelous works, which they did in my name;
62 Yea, and I will also bring to light my gospel which was ministered unto them, and, behold, they shall not deny that which you have received, but they shall build it up, and shall bring to light the true points of my doctrine, yea, and the only doctrine which is in me.
63 And this I do that I may establish my gospel, that there may not be so much contention; yea, Satan doth stir up the hearts of the people to contention concerning the points of my doctrine; and in these things they do err, for they do wrest the scriptures and do not understand them.

64 Therefore, I will unfold unto them this great mystery;
65 For, behold, I will gather them as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, if they will not harden their hearts;
66 Yea, if they will come, they may, and partake of the waters of life freely.
67 Behold, this is my doctrine—whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church.
68 Whosoever declareth more or less than this, the same is not of me, but is against me; therefore he is not of my church.

69 And now, behold, whosoever is of my church, and endureth of my church to the end, him will I establish upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.
70 And now, remember the words of him who is the life and light of the world, your Redeemer, your Lord and your God. Amen.
Many, of course, deny even the need for any further “revelation” from the God of Israel, but the Bible actually predicts much more revelation:

Many, of course, deny even the need for any further “revelation” from the God of Israel, but the Bible actually predicts much more revelation:

I have yet MANY THINGS to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you INTO ALL TRUTH: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. --John 16:12-13

I recommend reading all of the revelations given through the Prophet Joseph Smith. And by the way, I am an excommunicated Mormon myself because of the many problems that exist in the church today-- including a lack of revelation just as in the other churches seeking the glory of the world.

If you have problems with the Mormon church, please consider the Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants and other Mormon revelations independently.
