Any books on history of monks?

Hello, all:

I’m interested in reading a history of monks and friars, especially in connection with the outside world. For instance, I have found books on the history of nuns as teachers and nurses; I am looking for something comparable about monks. While I find the day-to-day life interesting, I am especially curious about the role monks played in shaping European or American history as teachers, chroniclers, etc.

Are there any such works?

Lots of them, particularly considering the monumental role played by monks and friars in forming Western civilization. Here’s just one, Alfred Wesley Wishart’s A Short History of Monks and Monasteries: gutenberg.org/files/13206/13206-h/13206-h.htm.

Thanks! I’ve also since found The Cloistered Life on Amazon.

Monks and friars aren’t the same
