Anything you hear

In The Book of Sirach, Chapter 19 Verse 9 states:

Let anything you hear die within you; be assured it will not make you burst.

 Please explain.

it’s a reference to keeping a confidence. People often feel like they “have to tell or repeat” something. We should not succumb to this.

It seems to be aimed at people who cannot help but pass on the juicy bits of gossip which they come across:

When you hear a rumor, keep it to yourself; you won’t explode from holding it in.

This is great advice, because it can prevent people from destroying reputations, relationships, and lives.

In other words: Don’t be a gossip.
