'The Archbishop of Canterbury said last night that God cannot be trusted to save the world from the environmental depredations of humanity. Dr Rowan Williams did not say there was no God. But he said that God is not a “safety net that guarantees a happy ending in this world.” ’
That is true enough. Jesus said that we should not put the Lord, our God, to the test. Divine Providence doesn’t always protect us from the consequences of our actions, nor should it be expected to.
Well, yeah. God’s message never was that “If you screw up creation, don’t worry, because I’ll swoop right in and fix everything for you.” Actions still have consequences.
This, I think, is in response to sentiments like “Why worry? God will take care of it. We don’t need to recycle.”
