Are the Jewish people still God's chosen people?

Are the people in Israel still protected and entitled to the land given to them by the allied forces following World War II? My husband is under the impression that as God’s chosen people, they are entitled to this land under God’s covenant with his people in Old Testament.
He also thinks the United States will always have an obligation to support Israel because they are “God’s chosen people.”
I think the Jewish covenant with God was broken when the Jewish people did not accept Jesus as God’s only Son and our Redeemer; and, that we as Catholics should work for and pray for their conversion to the Catholic faith just as we do other religions that have separated from the Catholic Church.
