Does anybody have insight in determining whether a particular attachment is “keeping” one from spiritual growth? For example, one enjoys chewing gum and frequently eats chewing gum. Is this person improperly attached and making “chewing gum” a means to an end?

An attachment would be anything that inhibits a person’s ability to grow closer to God. Gum chewing could become and attachment if it is something that the person begins doing while praying or going to Mass.
