It is a doctrine of the Catholic faith that Mary was taken up into heaven, body and 

soul, after the completion of her earthly life. The feast of the Assumption was celebrated by Christians as early as the seventh century. In 1950 the Pope in an exercise of Papal infallibility declared it a dogma of the Catholic faith.
