Vice President Joe Biden says the campaign's re-election theme is simple.
"If you're looking for a bumper sticker to sum up how President Obama has handled what we inherited, it's pretty simple: Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive," Biden said Thursday at New York University. "Gov. Romney is counting on our collective amnesia. But Americans know that we cannot afford to go back to the future."
Obama has talked about the auto bailout dozens of times over the past two years, making it a central plank in his re-election strategy.
Last month, Biden talked at length about the auto bailout at a United Auto Workers hall in Toledo after GM denied him permission to make a political speech inside a GM plant.
"(President Obama) made the tough call. And the verdict is in: President Obama was right and his critics were dead wrong," Biden said last month.
Biden has criticized former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for writing an op-ed titled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" and he noted Romney said a bailout would make GM "the living dead."
Biden said the nation has "living proof" that GM is alive and the auto industry as a whole has added 200,000 jobs since its low point.
