Border fence climb in TV report raises questions

A television report Monday showing two young men climbing over the border fence in Nogales with relative ease and without eliciting a response from Border Patrol agents is raising questions about the agency’s tactics.

The two young men, wearing large, crude packs possibly filled with drugs, were filmed by reporters with Mexican broadcaster TV Azteca as they climbed down the fence along West International Street during daylight hours, wandered along the road for around 90 seconds and then scaled the fence back to Mexico after seeing the crew filming them.

“With the agility of acrobats, they climb the wall with the drug loads wrapped in masking tape,” reporter Carolina Rocha narrated over the video, which cuts between the movements of the fence-jumpers and scenes of Border Patrol agents and vehicles, suggesting that agents were nearby and oblivious to the breach.
