Buddy earns his sergeant stripes

FORT HOOD — Capt. Jay Bunte relinquished command of the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment’s to Capt. David Jackson Thursday during a change of command ceremony.

In Bunte’s last official act as commander, he promoted the detachment’s mascot, Buddy, from corporal to sergeant. Buddy is an Australian shepherd/blue heeler mix who came to the detachment in 2004 after one of its troopers found him injured by the side of U.S. Highway 190. Buddy is about 8 or 9 years old, Bunte said.

Buddy’s usual spot during the detachment’s shows and demonstrations is behind a mule team on the wagon, where he is known to punctuate the cavalry charge with his distinctive bark.

Buddy gave that bark and a tail wag when asked to make remarks after his promotion Thursday.

Thanks for posting. What a handsome dog!
