Can I be discharged from my role as godparent?

I am a godparent to a child whose parents are fairly lawless, follow strange customs, and have, seemingly, lost faith. For my well-being and safety, I cease communication with the godchild’s parents for years, and, in turn, from my godchild as well. How am I able to be discharged from this role given the mentioned circumstances of the parents? If not absolute, then to what degree?
