Can I officiate at a secular wedding?

#1

One of my closest friends from college recently got engaged. The couple asked me if I would be the Officiant for their wedding ceremony as they don’t feel comfortable having a clergymen of any faith doing it. They said though I wouldn’t really be officiating as they are planning to elope the week before unbeknownst to most people and the ceremony would be more for the people attending.

I told them that I would have to get back to them on my response. My gut instinct was to say no and not be a part of it but I wanted to see if maybe such a reaction was misplaced. How involved can I be in such a wedding? Is it even considered as a wedding?
