Can pets be spayed or neutered?

Since we are forbidden to use contraception on ourselves, are we also prohibited from doing these procedures on our pets?

Because man has been given stewardship over animals (CCC 2417), it is perfectly fine for a person to choose to spay or neuter his pet. Man has not been given similar authority to contracept or to sterilize himself, indeed he has been forbidden to do so (CCC 2399).
