When we decide to go on holiday, should we only go to places where we can be sure we will get to attend Mass on Sundays? Or is it okay to miss Sunday Mass to go on holidays specially to enjoy God’s creation – nature, safaris, and the like?
As I’m sure you realize, the word holiday is a contraction for “holy day.” When we go “on holiday,” it is so we can focus our attention more closely on God and family (and please note the order there); it is not so we can escape obligations to God and family. So, yes, of course, you should plan your vacations so that every effort is made to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. On those rare occasions when you are traveling in areas where you cannot find a Catholic church, the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days may be dispensed. But that does not mean that you should attempt to avoid participation in the God-ordained eucharistic liturgy by claiming that you are worshipping God in your own way by hiking through his creation.
