Can you answer this evolution question?

I know Catholics have to hold Adam and Eve had human souls and are mankind's parents, but can we believe they were not homo sapiens? I'm wondering because Genesis was written prior to science classifying homo sapiens, homo erectus, ect. and I now wonder if it would be permissible to believe Adam and Eve were pre-human as defined by science, but having human souls as defined by religion.
