In the wake of the swine flu scare, some parishes have recommended refraining receiving Communion from the chalice to prevent the spread of the virus in this way. Some Catholics feel that it is blasphemous to suggest that one could catch a virus from Communion. What do you think?
The precious blood does not “inoculate” the chalice from germs. To suggest that it does is superstitious. When there is an epidemic, it is indeed prudent to temporarily halt the distribution of the precious blood. Reception under both species is unnecessary; a full Communion is made when someone receives either the host or from the chalice.
