Chamber of Commerce Says Taxpayers Should Help Pay for BP Spill Cleanup; GOP Leader Agrees, Then Recants

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce thinks that the U.S. taxpayers should help BP pay for the clean up associate with the oil gushing from its deep-water oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. Republican Sen. Boehner seems to agree.

Government handouts, a.k.a. socialism, is ok to Republican leadership and to business as long as it's corporate socialism, it seems.

Wonder why he recanted.

He didn't say that. In fact, he didn't answer the question.

"I think the people responsible in the oil spill--BP and the federal government--should take full responsibility for what's happening there," Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning.

This is a non-answer answer.

Non-answer or no non-answer, I say "all hands on deck". I don't care who they are, or whose money they're using. If, Louisiana has a dredge or Exxon has a bunch of oil booms, I'm for them or anybody else who has any idea what they're doing, getting into it and contributing what they can.

I'm about as pro-business as anyone. As an accountant, however, I suppose I am more "about" tying costs to their drivers. In this case, the "driver" of the oil cost is BP's rig. So BP should pay the cost. I certainly don't want to pay more taxes to clean it up, although we may all pay a little in higher gas prices, more oil regulation, and loss of business in the gulf having an effect on other areas of the economy.

Personally, I think the government should be more involved in the clean up - who is more efficient than the army? But they need to charge all their work and resources back to BP.
