in the Christus victor model of salvation the devil is bound up in hell and defeated. one aspect of this that I am sure has a simple answer has eluded me. How does he still exert influence in the world after being defeated ie. tempting people etc. or is it just meant that he no longer holds dominion and we have the chance to escape his clutches since our redemption through Christ?
The Lord said in the Gospels that you and everyone else has the power to trample over scorpions and demons. You just have to know how to use that power. There is great potential in every Christian. That means you can defeat the devil the same as Jesus. God has not given us a great monster to contend with but someone you can easily defeat if you will only learn to know that you are powerful enough to do this and you can drive that devil to go back into hell. The problem today is this lack of education to know what to do when contending with the forces which the devil influences us with. We need to realise to activate that power which is given to us by the Lord into the right direction and to stand out the same as did our Lord Jesus. Here the Church and the Holy Mother can be our guideposts. We need not to be afraid! We need to send that fear back unto the devil. We are called to exemplify the Lord. That is why the Lord permits the devil to contend with us.

I’ve never heard of The Christus Victor Model. Can you please expand, elucidate and provide primary sources?
It’s the idea that Christ came to destroy death through His own death and victory on the cross.
20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For “He has put all things under His feet.”[a] But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all. - 1 Corinthians 20-28

It is certainly a dominant idea in Byzantine Christianity. It is exemplified by the typical Orthodox icon of the Resurrection. Notice how the gates of hell are below His feet and the devil is bound in chains. Also Christ is pulling Adam and Eve out of Hades by their wrists, not holding hands.
